I am thinking of moving my mmorpg-ing activities into the world of Vana'diel as i am getting bored of my current one (a certain Tolkien-related one), the only thing i am slightly concerned about is the graphics, now don't get me wrong i don't judge a game on graphics , however i like to utilise my relatively high-end system as much as possible. As this is also a PS2 game i'm a bit worried that last - gen PS2 - esque graphics will put me off, are they considerably better on the PC and are there any graphics updates/enhancements you can apply to the game. I honestly don't judge a game on graphics , but these days i like to have just as good graphics as playability , i think a truly great game should be good in all areas.
Thanks in advance. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 02-28-2008, 10:38 AM | #2 (permalink) | | Bewilderbeast Brain of Knowledge Join Date: May 2006 Posts: 1,614 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 114 Thanked 337x in 216 Posts Gil: 10 Bank: 58,117 Total Gil: 58,127 Donate | Re: Last-gen graphics? You can always dig through In-Game Screenshots - Final Fantasy XI :: Dreams in Vana'diel :: Community to see what it looks like for some people. You can also read Graphics - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki to get an idea of some of the graphical tweaking you can do on PC.
Mostly, the PC version can get up to a higher resolution, and you can "fake" anti-aliasing (which the game doesn't support) if your hardware is good enough.
That's about it. IMO, the game looks fine. It may not have the highest polygon count or the most high-res textures, but what it does have is really high quality. Characters have believable physical forms with very well-animated movements. It's easy to get lost in. Ellipses on Fenrir There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

The graphics on the pc version are better than the ps2 graphics, but mostly because the pc version can support higher resolutions. Although, resolutions higher than 1024 don't really add that much. In my opinion though, the graphics aren't that bad. It's just the fact that their aren't many character faces or customization available thanks to the the game being ps2 compatible. The ps2 compatibility also causes SE to continuously use the same models for armor and monsters, so a lot of things look the same. It's kinda annoying when SE announces new weapons and armor and it looks EXACTLY like previous weapons/armor.
All in all, the graphics aren't too bad except for a few flaws, it's not anything that will ruin the game for you, but you won't really be able to utilize your high-end computer with this game :/ | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 02-28-2008, 03:20 PM | #4 (permalink) | | Oh yeah! yeah yeah, yeah! FFXI's graphics are obviously weak, but the art direction is very strong, so it keeps up. It still looks better than any of the other MMOs I've seen, with the exception of EVE (and space is an entirely different thing to show) | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 02-28-2008, 05:39 PM | #5 (permalink) | | яашя Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 28 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 1 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 2,454 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 2,454 Donate | Re: Last-gen graphics? Well actually depending on your settings the games graphics can look really ugly. Then I learned a while back about my friend resolution it sharpened the game the texture everything and it did not look last gen at all. The PS2 version does not really look like the best.. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 02-28-2008, 06:18 PM | #6 (permalink) | | Vault Dweller Join Date: Dec 2006 Location: FL Posts: 491 Style: Dark - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 83 Thanked 81x in 49 Posts Gil: 1,607 Bank: 29,791 Total Gil: 31,398 Donate | Re: Last-gen graphics? FFXI does enough to be a pretty game without going overboard and taxing low end systems. Unless you are really particular about variety and high-detail, you should not have issues with how FFXI looks. Even when I had my graphics on low at one point before my new Graphics card. I prefer FFXI low graphics over other games its the land scape that FFXI provides that gets me so addicted to it. Each place I go to in the game is like a adventure when I play games like WoW it feels so fake. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-03-2008, 04:54 AM | #8 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 1 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,079 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,079 Donate | Re: Last-gen graphics? Tho the original textures are lower res then the newest games out there. FFXI's Art direction and Animationj are simply amazing.
I play on the PC and 360 and on the PC I'm constantly impressed with how good this game looks and feels compared to EQ1,EQ2,DAOC,AO, which were the other MMORPGS I've played.
Don't let the age fool you there is a seriously beautiful game visually here.It just isn't as sharp a resolution as others that just came out. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -8.
