I unfortunately can't remember for the life of me what the laptop controls are. I think the manual has laptop controls, but if it really bugs you that much, they make USB numpads. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to Kholdstare for above post: | | | 12-19-2007, 11:23 AM | #3 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: Lakewood, OH Posts: 16 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 3 Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post Gil: 1,363 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,363 Donate | Re: laptop keybored??? I'm a laptop user as well who doesn't have a num pad. My - key is just to the right of my 0 key. Even w/o a num pad you should still have a - key. If for some reason you don't, then try remaping your keys. I had to change to the 'compact' keyboard setting and do a lot of key remaping to make the UI laptop friendly. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to Croix for above post: | | | 12-19-2007, 11:32 AM | #4 (permalink) | | Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Winston,GA Posts: 655 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 42 Thanked 23x in 21 Posts Gil: 6,307 Bank: 12,253 Total Gil: 18,561 Donate | Re: laptop keybored??? Personally whenever I play on the PC edition I can't stand to use the KB controls at all! To me these seem to be a tourture device desiged to make controling my character and the camera much more difficult than it needs to be. The only way to play FFXI for me is a USB gamepad...perfably one that is just like the PS2 controler....(and yes I configure the buttons to act the same way as the PS2 edition)
FFXI wasn't really designed for KBs in my book but you might try the "compact" KB setting and see if that works for you if you don't want to play with a controler... | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to Shadowneko for above post: | | | 12-19-2007, 11:32 AM | #5 (permalink) | | Boom de yada! Ctrl (or Alt, I think) plus the - key that's right next to 0 to bring up the menu, then set it to Compact layout, like Croix said. From then on, you won't need the Ctrl/Alt. Ellipses on Fenrir There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

Most notebook keyboards have a modifier key that causes a set of keys on the keyboard to emulate the numeric keypad, for instance on a Dell Inspiron there is a "Fn" key between Left-Ctrl and Windows keys, and Fn + ; produces the numeric keypad's -
For notebook you should probably switch to Compact layout, typing takes a little getting used to (must start with space or / ) but it's easier on the whole. Exception would be if using a gamepad, normal layout might be easier then since most functions can be accessed by pad, but typing will always be keyboard. OK, your laptop doesn't have a Numpad. That's no problem! Here is the sequence you should use to be able to use your laptop effectively and efficiently:
Open your Main Menu
Go into Config
Go into the MISC (1 or 2, I don't remember)
For Keyboard function, choose Compact
You'll see a list of keys.
Move keys are: AWSD
Camera keys are: Arrow keys
You can change your keys to whatever you want. I changed my Main Menu key to O, and my Items to I and my equipment to E
Main menu opens just by hitting the O button. I and E with CTRL.
How to use your macros are with CTRL and ALT (as regular)
Talking in chat window is spacebar or by hitting /
How to choose yourself is F7 (or F1)
Enemies are F8 (this includes NPCs also I believe).
Hope that helps. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to Lunaped for above post: | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -8.
