How do i take a SS of my chatlog? - Final Fantasy XI :: Dreams in Vana'diel :: Community

I've been trying to take a picture of my chat log, and cant seem to do it correctly. A normal screenshot is fine when i "Scroll lock" then "print screen" it gets sent to me on POL, but for some reason it does not seem to work when i try and take one without using the "Scroll lock" key. Anyone mind explaining how to take a pic of the chatlog?

This should most likely be in FAQ section, but currently there is no way to do a "legal" screenshot of your chat log. You have to completely hide the chatlog and then take a screenshot in game. All the people that have screenshots of their chatlogs are using a 3rd party app to do so.

But, since it's here. Why aren't we allowed to take screenies of our chatlog? That would something a lot of people would love to have. Able to screenshot your damage against the Dynamis Lord. Or somebody said something inappropriate or threatening to you in /tell. You would then be able to screenshot those things when reporting others. Would also be nice to catch those embarrassing mts from that special LS mate and post on the forums for the World to "enjoy."

Now that we have the official windower, you can actually take a legal screenshot of chat text. Hitting the printscreen button while using the official windowed mode basically copies your entire screen to the clipboard. At that point, you can paste it into MS paint, etc.

Seriously? I'm using the windower now, oh i hope i got the SS of that WS >< and wheres this clipboard, do yall mean the thing on POL where most other screenshots are sent?

I thought that would work also, but it doesn't work. The windowed mode must block that out or something because I have tried that and have not been able to get it to work. I use a program called clipper to get my pics.

Bullshit. Fraps, along with any other video capture program, is legal. Google them.

And he means the clipboard you use to cut and paste things. Print Screen, in Windows anyway, takes a picture of your screen. You can then paste it into a photo program and save it, but that's a huge hassle, and very backwards.

Just google Fraps, or something like it, and use that.

It's the Windows clipboard. You know, copy, paste, etc. This isn't a game feature, it's a Windows feature: Print Screen copies the entire screen to the clipboard, Alt+Print Screen copies the current window. But apparently FFXI somehow disables that when in windowed mode.

I imagine most people use Fraps or Clipper, though I'm sure there are other options out there as well.

It worked for me. I have a screenshot of my entire desktop with a blinding picture of me in Sky as part of it.

Like Feba said, get FRAPs. Despite being a '3rd party app' it's pretty much endorsed and okay'd by SE themselves. There are actually SSs(ironically taken via Fraps) of GMs in game recommending people use fraps and I believe it was the video-capture-program of choice for all their fan-movie contests. It's free, runs in the background, and allows you to take much clearer pics then the official SS program. It works in both official windowed mode and standard mode and you can still always do the scroll lock+SS thing to get that nice, clear pic.

Long story short, we use Fraps.

Its a great program, and its not illegal at all. Also the reasoning behind SE wanting you to hide your chat log before taking SS, was because, the main point of taking a SS is to take them of your character.... not the chat log ;p and on PS2 (what the game was originaly designed for) the chat log it pretty big and would make SS suck.

Actually I like GameCam over Fraps for two reasons. One, the free version will take JPG or PNG screenshots, free Fraps only does colossal BMP. Two, GameCam only costs $10 compared to Fraps which is (iirc) $40.

Now if only they'd hurry up and release the Vista compatible GameCam.

Oh forgot to mention, it also does record video, but as I said, at the moment it's XP only. No I am in no way affiliated with them.

If all you're interested in is taking screenshots (both Fraps and GameCam can do more) there is also this free program which I have used before called ScreenCap.. It also does JPG and PNG at no cost.

which is why I said other programs. There are other alternatives to fraps out there.

Although, Mhurron, is there any reason to pay for fraps? I mean, I'm pretty sure there's like a restriction on video recording time with fraps, but other than that I don't remember anything major. still able to take screenshots and all just fine.

I'd be willing to bet that you could find a good video capture out there that's open source if you looked, although they aren't as popular so they might not have as much attention put into them.

Paid Fraps lets you record unlimited lengths of time, and take screenshots in JPG, PNG and TIFF. There might be more but personally I found $40 to be too expensive.
