Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP :(

Your problem is that you're trying to use an on-boad graphics card to run a 3D game.

FFXI uses Direct3D, and your SiS 651-based graphics hardware does not properly support Direct3D.

You need to purchase a standalone graphics card and install it to fix your problem.

GeForce 7 series and up if you'd like to keep up with other current games.

Oh.

You might want someone who knows what they are doing to install it. But yes.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP :(

You can get away with a lot less than that if you just want it to play FFXI with. But if you want to play other, more current games on your PC, then you'll want one.

Everybody has to start somewhere. Installing a video card is probably the simplest, most foolproof, and cheapest thing for someone to learn how to do themselves. Computers are like cars, changing out most components is very simple if you just read the instructions, except PCs are much smaller, even easier, and there's no grease (although depending on the age of your PC there might be an assload of dust)

You might as well do it yourself, it'll save you a load of cash (unless you have a friend do it), and anyone intelligent enough to make it in FFXI will have no problem replacing a graphics card.

As to what you should get, I'd recommend a GeForce 8 series. They're a little more expensive than the 7 series, but they're very much worth it, and should last you a long time.

EDIT: If price is an issue, I recommend this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130095

Do be sure to look up the difference between "AGP" and "PCI-e (16)", and be sure that your PC has the right kind of port. Buying a PCI-e card when your PC only has AGP, or vice versa, is a huge waste of cash.

- Buy a decent graphics card (anything $100+ will do for FFXI, but you'll want something more if you want to run newer PC games).

- Turn off and unplug the power to your computer (very important).

- Unscrew the case with a Phillipse screwdriver ("+" shape). Don't lose the screws.

- Find the bank of expansion slots on your motherboard inside, You'll find them as a whole row of long raised "slots" on your board, connected to a bunch of metal panels on the back. The back panels are usually attached via small screws (use the same screwdriver as above to remove them - and keep track of them).

- Remove one panel, and insert the new graphics card gently, with the metal contacts facing "down" and the video plugs facing "out" the back of the computer. You may need to fiddle with the lock mechanism on the AGP (brown, usually) slot. It should slide into the slot easily. If it doesn't, you're doing something wrong. Do NOT apply heavy pressure or bang on the card; you'll damage your hardware. You may need to "lock" the card into place on the AGP slot after it slides in - depends on the motherboard design.

- After inserting the card, put the screw back into place (tighten firmly but not too hard). Throw away the metal strip that was in that slot.

- Put the case back on your PC, and return the screws back to their places to finish.

----

This all assumes that you're using a desktop unit. If you're using a laptop... well... you're pretty much hosed.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP :(

Everyone does have to start somewhere, but if he could find someone else to do it, it would be better. Especially if he can observe it happening.

Murphie: Well you yourself have said you're afraid of messing with your PC. I wouldn't take advice from someone who's afraid of it to know what's a good idea or not :p

They come with very clear instructions. You'd have to be a total idiot to screw it up-- in which case, you shouldn't be playing FFXI, so it's just Darwin in action.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP :(

I've installed a video card, ram, and a wireless card. It is really easy. I just don't want to put a PC together from scratch. Or rather, I'm not confident enough in my ability to do so.

That said, I don't want to get into an internet fight about it. It's not an important enough issue. If the OP feels confident enough in his ability to do it, then more power to him. He should be able to get a fairly inexpensive card if all he wants to do is play FFXI with it.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP :(

Then the answer should be obvious. Go with the really expensive one.
