Playing on a portabl harddrive?

Hey, I've got a 80Gig portable hard drive, is it possible to copy the FFXI folder to the HDD and play it from work? I would just install it at work, but I believe even if I were to install it onto my HDD, it would show up in add-remove programs and take up a large portion of space.(Or atleast appear like it does) Though I imagine it may not work via HDD due to registry issues; any help is greatly appreciated.
