Changing keys...

Well, I just started FFXI yesterday night, and I gotta say, it's reallyyyy confusing, at least for me.

But my main question is how can I change what keys do what? I asked one person in the game, but they said it's on the Numpad, which I don't have since I'm using a laptop.

I honestly have to say I don't like the starting configuration at all. :\ Lol, every time I try to move I press w, a, s, or d, then the chat comes up, and then...it just gets annoying.

Might as well add a random question... Is there any way I can get a map to use whenever I need? I get more lost than a mouse in a maze with no cheese. -.-

Re: Changing keys...

Uhh, okay to change the config, go to Config on the menu, Misc. 2, and Compact Keyboard mode. It will put wasd as your movement, and you have to press spacebar to bring up the chat box if I remember correctly. And then to bring up your map, just go up to the menu and bring it up, if you want something faster, you can type /map, or you can put that on a macro if you want, say alt+0 as /map, and it will bring up the map for you. I hope this helps. :D

Re: Changing keys...

Where's this "Menu" you're talking about?

The in-game menu that has Chat, Items, etc, doesn't have anything about Config, and the menu before you start playing on the Playonline program doesn't say Config... Unless I'm missing something.

Re: Changing keys...

Maps are bought in each city(I don't know what your starting city is so I cant give u more specific info)--before u get the maps I would try walking around and talking to the NPCs(computer guys), as you will need to at some point.

As far as changing the controls(IT kind of depends on what system u are playing on). I play on an X-box 360 so I more use a joystick for movement and most controls, and only use the keybord to type. I know how to change some of the commands but not many of them(pretty much know how to set-up and change macros)

If u are on Lakshami(the server name will be the 1st thing displayed when u appear on-screen) I can show you around.

There is another in-game menu(on the 360 I press the button to the left of the 4 button formation-not sure about the computer or playstation though)

heh, now this is where reading the game manual comes in handy... to access the "Menu" hit '-' (that's minus) on the number pad.

What are u playing on(x-box, playstation)? As I said eariler if u press the left button in the 4 button cluster it will open up a main in-game menu(a much bigger 1 than the 1 u are opening) where there should be a configure option. On the playstation it should be similar to the x-box(but not sure though-should be one of the buttons--not the action button though) If you are on a computer im not sure what the command would be to open the menu , but there should be 1

Re: Changing keys...

He said he's playing on a Laptop in his very first post. Pay attention, people!

I can't help you because I'm on a normal computer, but if I were in your position I'd start pressing random buttons. It's fun and productive.

I think there might be a Ctrl- shortcut, something similar to Ctrl-E bringing up your Equipment menu, and Ctrl-G giving you a million gil while fighting an enemy.

Re: Changing keys...

Ah, yeah, for some reason ctrl + - wasn't working before, but then I tried it earlier, and it brought up the menu.

So I got it now. :D
