How do I create a linkshell group?

I'm just curious as to how I would go about creating a linkshell group.

Also one more question, is there a limited number of colors you can choose? I would assume two LS's can't have the same color etc.

you have to purchase a shell from an NPC vendor in one of the starting nations for 8000. LS colors need not be distinct, so you can choose whatever color you want
