Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

I'm guessing it is assumed that everyone knows this already, as I can't find a thread that talks about it, and your glossary has a whole 6 terms in it

What is Latent Effect?

(pardon me for using Allakhazam, I like their item pics)

Also, I'm unsure on what Additional Effect exactly does. I recently bought a Cruel Scythe for my DRK.

I'm assuming that it is the mob's evasion is decreased, and not mine. Right?

Another thing, so I don't need to make another thread....can someone point me to a thread or article eplaining exactly what DEX, VIT, ect....are?

I think I have STR and INT and AGI understood, but not sure on the others.

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

Latent effect is an effect triggered by something - examples of what triggers items latents:

Sub job
Low HP
Having songs cast on you

etc.

Additional effect is an effect which sometimes kicks in when you hit the mob, it will say: "Additional effect: xxx"

That earring I beleive is triggered by PLD sub.

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

So we have to figure out what triggers the Latent Effect on our own? Will we get a prompt when it has been triggered?

Get absolutely nothing at all.
However KI and Alla both have the majority of these "Latent" items in their databases, just do item search, and they'll tell you what triggers it.

I can give you a few though

All Lv30 Earrings and Backpieces with "Latent Effect" are sub job activated
Esquire = PLD sub
Genin = NIN sub
Ashigura? = SAM sub
Beater = RNG sub
Mercenary = WAR sub
Warlock = RDM sub
Magician = SMN sub

not sure of the last ones

All Lv50 Job exclusive latent rings : Activates with yellow HP

All trial weapons : Activates immediatly, once it de-activates your trial is complete and you can turn in the weapon and get the quest itself for your trial weapon skill

The lv70ish weapons (Maneater for instance) are below 100 TP activated and deactivates once you reach 100 tp and re-activates upon use of weaponskill

Caitlif's Socks is a feet item around 65-70ish who's latent activates when you reach critical red (100ish hp) and activates flee, not sure how long flee lasts in this condition, but it seems to last until you get above critical red again.

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

You can find out what triggers it pretty easily - I see you use Alla already, so read the comments on the items - someone will have posted what triggers it.

The Lv.30 earrings are triggered by subjob - so checking which triggers it is probably best, only ones I know are Genin Earring triggered by having Ninja sub and Healers earring triggered by having WHM sub.

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

Latent just means it's not an on-all-the-time effect. As mentioned above, the conditions vary widely depending on the item.

Caitiff's Socks activate Flee randomly when you're damaged at orange or lower HP. The effect lasts the standard 30 seconds, and can trigger multiple times (but the trigger rate is very low - I tried a pair after getting some from Megalobugard once and it activated maybe 10% of the time)

EDIT:

STR = Strength
DEX = Dexterity
VIT = Vitality
AGI = Agility
MND = Mind
CHR = Charisma
HP = Health Points
MP = Magic Points
DEF = Defense
ATK = Attack

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

STR - effects Attack, increases weaponskill damage
DEX - effects Accuracy, better chance of critical hits, Sneak Attack modifier
VIT - effects Defense, decreases physical damage taken (STR and VIT sort of oppose each other the same way Attack and Defense do)
AGI - effects Ranged Attack Accuracy, Evasion, Parry, Guard, and Shield skills, Trick Attack modifier
MND - strength and accuracy of White Magic, as well as defense against it
INT - strength and accuracy of Black Magic, as well as defense against it
CHR - effects Charm for BST and the success rate of debuff songs for BRD, defense against songs, and modifies Killer traits

There are a lot of job-specific things each stat can effect, too. Each weaponskill has certain attribute modifiers, which vary from weaponskill to weaponskill, though most use STR. Some job abilities have stat modifiers (like Chi Blast and MND). Some of the "additional effect" items are effected by increased stats.

Edit: added corrections from Icemage and Liquidedust, thanks.

CHR also is a modifier for Killer effects don't forget that bit .

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

MND is magic defense for white magic effects (Banish, Slow, Paralyze, etc.). INT is magic defense for black magic effects (Stonega, Burn, Blind, etc.). CHR is defense against songs (Lullaby, Elegy, Threnody, Requiem).

Re: Latent Effect, Additional Effet, ect...

Killer Effects are things like Plant Killer, Beast Killer, Demon Killer, etc. If you have Plant Killer, and have hate from a plant-type mob (e.g., mandragora), you have a chance of intimidating it, which is a bit like paralyze. You'll get a message "The mandragora is indimidated by Awsomebstguy's presence" and it won't attack or do whatever it was about to do.
