from what i hav gathered, AF equipment is the 'ultimate' equipment for a said job, but what does it actually stand for?

Artifact armor. It's not really the "best" armor for the job, but it makes the job look a lot more like older Final Fantasy games. You'll often see people wearing some AF and mix it with other things.

You can start your artifact weapon quest at level 40. Although these weapons usually aren't very good. Then at 50 you can start the quest for the armors themselves. You can wear the first piece of armor at 52. Then it goes up every even level until your last piece at 60.

Other thing you have to be aware that AFs do is for many jobs that gear is the only gear to give certain special enhancements to an ability related to that job. Some of the enhancements are quite useful if you reconize their benefit and use it right.

and i wouldn't call the af gear "ultimate." it's "cool" to wear and to show off, but it usually isn't ultimate. in fact, it ...ususally isn't even... "good"

I think that the AF armor is more of a symbolic quality to them. If you spot someone decked out in full AF (maybe even partial), then you know what job that person is playing.

I can't wait until I am able to do my own AF quest myself. But until that day, I can at least admire those characters who do have theirs from afar ^^

Indeed. In one way, people flaunt their AF gear, just to let people know who they are. When I get mine (working on gloves now), I'm gonna show off the gear and let people knowI'm a black mage. It's like a sense of accomplishment once you get the af gear.

Especially on a Mithra...though its pretty sexy no matter which race is wearing it.

I agree...but that is why I chose Mithra as my race and RDM as my job...
