At your level I would start up the hills around town and start killing goblins. Make sure signet is on and collect as many fire crystals as you can (1000~1500 gil for a stack of 12). Some will drop wild onions. You can turn these in repeatedly to complete the gourmet quest or sell them at the auction house in stacks of 12 for 3000~3500 gil. General rule of thumb: don't sell anything to merchants and look up every item you don't know what to do with at http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/search.html to see if it's useful.

The only time you get paid for missions is when you've done enough for your rank to go up. So once you've done a certain amount of missions and your rank goes up you get money.

Its better if you sell any crystal or crafting materials at start, you can get them back at higher lvl.

mostly everything that is dropped is useful to some degree.
try to farm the same types of mobs until u get 12 of an item then go to the ah and seach to see what a stack of 12 sells for and sell it for 1 gil less then the lowest price listed (this is because in the ah items sell according to price lowest to highest always).
happy hunting.

first of all beginning of game you dont need alot of gil. talk to gate guards make sure you have them cast signet before leaving town to kill things make this a habit. do quests there are alot of in town quests that either give items you can use or sell. please dont beg for gil, no quicker way to get black listed or a bad rep. i havent done much questing in bastok but im sure there are some repeatables that give enuff gil for early levels. crystals are best gil maker at your level namely fire crystals. wind crystals also very good. youll find later on making gil is like having a job in the real world. i farm for 3 to 4 hours a day during the week and level on weekends. another way to make gil is buy items in shops and sell them on ah to people that are to lazy to go to shop and buy. bastok music shop sells bard scrolls cheap as 27 gil, these scrolls sell for 500g on my server on the ah. in sandoria i buy magic scrolls (poison) less than 100g have sold for up to 800g on ah. then if you pay attention sometimes you find items on ah that sell to npcs for more than you get on ah. if you have mules (2nd and 3rd characters in other citys) buy items cheap on ah in 1 town sell for more in other town. i have made 300k in a week doing this stuff. i have awesome equip most of which i got very cheaply. good luck have fun and be patient early on

I used to do teh sheep leather thingy for a quick buck too, but I farmed the items to do so, cept teh water, and windy leaves. Those are dirt cheap in shops.

But leather is only around 6-7k on my server.

Fishing. I make very very good money this way but you have to bring it to 50ish first. If you can get to 11-18 you can do Moat Carps reasonably well. At level 50 I can make up to 70k an hr or so, so it's well worth the time invested (1 solid month).

Check the fishing boards to get a skill up chart.
