Keyboards

I am wonering if a keyboard in an absolute must when you play this game. If possible, I would like to play far into this game on the ps2 controller. Would that be impossible? Would i be handicapped in any ways (i.e getting parties)?

it is possible to play ffxi with just your ps2 controller using the onscreen keyboard, but it is so time consuming and simply a pain in the butt typing a message that it is useless. do yourself a favor and spend 15-20 dollars and get a usb keyboard, you'll be glad you did. especially when you are in a party or linkshell.

playing ffxi without a keyboard is like typing a normal keyboard w/ only one finger, without knowing a key layout. u know how that's a pain in the a$$ when it comes to communicating w/ others.

like LoboTD said, it's possible to play without, but trust me, u'll eventually want to get a USB keyboard. and if u r lazy to have 2 things hooked up, this thing might be interesting to u; http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...CONTENTID=6635

Although most USB keyboards should work fine, stay away from the MadCatz Sharkboard (i think it's MadCatz) and any Compaq keyboards.

The Sharkboard doesn't work with FFXI and there have been issues with Compaq keyboards as well, from what I've heard.

I have the game on the way, and it will be a while before I get up and running. I was going to use the keyboard from my old Gateway. Has anyone heard of any problems using this type of keyboard?

if its a usb keyboard then you should be fine , but if its a PS/2 Keyboard you might want to get a converter

Actually I was going to use the Gateway keyboard on my ps2. Seeing how the system and the game have not arrived yet, I wasn't sure if it would work or not. Based on your reply I get the impression that it wouldn't.

just to make sure that u know what he's talking about, what Mercuti0 is referring to by "PS/2" is not "Playstation 2" (see the slash between PS and 2?) but the PS/2 port to connect the mouse and keyboards, which looks like this;

in today's PC's, keyboards r connected through either USB or PS/2 ports, while Playstation 2 only supports the USB keyboards. again, like Mercuti0 said, if ur keyboard is indeed USB one, it might well work. at any rate, check ur keyboard and see if it's USB or PS/2. my guess is it's PS/2, though, in which case u'll need to buy either converter or new USB keyboard. (PS/2->USB converter may not work w/ Playstation 2 at all, while it has to be confirmed by someone else.)

EDIT: for some reason [IMG] tag isn't working...

I use a converter with my dell keyboard. I only paid about $6 for one, and its a GE and it works fine. My advice is to get a converter if ur gateway keyboard is not a USB one. Its cheaper than getting a whole new keyboard.
