Question Attack Modifier?

I'm sorry if this has been posted already; I couldn't find it using search. Ok, on with the question: what exactly does the attack modifier do? I've been trying to figure this out for awhile now, but no one seems to know.

Now I'm in desperate need of an answer because I'm trying to decide whether to keep using Legionnaire’s Gloves for +3 attack modifier or use a new pair of gloves for 3 more defense points.

Thanks in advance.

well it all depends on how well your character is doing in battle. if he is striking well an is killing mosters fast, but you take the damage then go with the gloves. let where you battle an how you battle decide what you need.
also you can guy to the auction house an buy gloves that keep the modifier at +3 but also raises defense an adds hp.

i think attack is how good you hit. and def is how often u get hit.

every enemy has defense. so as example.

a lvl 7 hornet as maybe 21 defense and u have 21 attack u might hit every second strike. with 42 attack u would hit it out 3 of 4. thats why u hit lower lvls much more then high lvl ones etc.

the damage dealt and taken belongs on the lvl difference as far as i understand the game. even u get hit and you hit qual to your enemy. if the enemy is very tough or it does double damage to you. incredible tough 4 times damage. is it easy prey half damage etc.

i hope you get what i mean ^^ oh and thats only what i think how it works!

Thanks for the replies.

And Throgar, doesn't the accuracy modifier affect how often you hit and miss? This is what's been confusing me all these time. If attack modifier and accuracy modifier are two different stats for your character, just what exactly does the attack modifier do? Increase damage? I'm still going crazy over this one. Any other comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

str= maximum damage you can do
attack= average attack
so the higher your attack, the more you'll usually hit for, +3 attack is almost nothing though, same for 3 defence.
