Well you unplug your network adapter plug that onto your HDD. Then you slide the HDD in then screw the network adapter back onto your Playstation.

Edit. I should of explanned by way of getting the new adapter as well, as Bishop posted after.

If you have a network adaptor, and you installed it, you should know where it is. If you just unplug your network adaptor, theres a huge rectangular hole there. No the hole is not a s ecret compartment, it's for the hdd. I think it also mentions it on your network adaptor manual.

The network adapter is also the interface between the game and the hard drive :p I had a USB network adapter I used for EQOA beta and I had to actually go out and buy the official Ps2 one because the hard drive wouldnt work without it

Now I have this extra USB network adapter laying around, bleh....

Those are for japanese ps2s. Some JP ps2s don't have the internal slot in the back so they need the external hdd.

Exactly. JPN Models 10000 15000 and 18000 require an external HDD. It, however, does not use the USB but rather a Type III PCMCIA interface card and the HDD plugs into the card via a special cable. This interface was removed form the NA, EUR, and later JPN models to cut the cost to manufacture the PS2.

If your the "usb' ones you are talking about is the japanese external hdds, then no, they won't make those for NA. Look at http://www.ffxionline.com/install_hdd_hw.html. As you can see, the older japanese ps2's still have an internal slot, just much smaller than the new ps2's and cannot fit a normal hdd inside. Those will not be produced in NA because they won't even work with ANY of the NA ps2s.
