I have this exact same problem. i just bought the Soyo versionsfrom fryes/outpost.com. And if you click on the gamepad settings in FFXI config it never appears. If you control alt delete you can see it running but you never see the configuration screen. And if i unplug the usb to ps2 adapter you can then get into the gamepad settings area. This is the same model somebody in in another thread said wworked just fine. Anyone ever had this problem and resolved it?????

Yes I had this exact problem and I solved it.

First off, I was waiting for a video card on my PC to play the beta so in the meantime I had installed the game on my laptop and plugged in a PS2->USB convertor to use my dual shock. Everything worked fine, configured the controller no problem.

I then recieve my video card and opted to install the game on my PC. Plugged in the controller, installed it...... coudn't open the gamepad config sub-program. Same as you guys, once I tried opening it, it didn't come up and further attempts said that the program was already running.

So what was the difference? Well, turns out that I didn't use the drivers that came with the convertor on my laptop, I just let 2K's plug and play driver stand. On the PC I had installed the drivers off the CD.

Unfortunately it wasn't as easy as simply removing the hardware using Device Manager, the drivers just wouldn't go away. Everytime I plugged the controller back in it would automatically use those drivers. So I went into the registry via REGEDIT. First thing I did was export a copy of the registry. Whenever you go in to modify your reg you should always back it up. I then did a search for every key with a value of "PSX/USB" (what the driver appeared as in Gaming Options of the control panel). If you are going to use this method, be sure to check the name of the driver from the Gaming Options panel. If you can't find it, try running a search for just "PSX". I then deleted every key or grouping of keys with a reference to this.

Once I updated the registry I restarted, plugged in the controller, did not install the drivers, and voila I was able to open the GamePad config options of FFXI.

You still need to calibrate the controller under Gaming Options in order for FFXI's GamePad Config program to recognize all the buttons and the D-pad and everything.

You'll know you removed all the drivers when you open Gaming Options the window will be drastically different since its using the OS plug and play driver.

Hope this helps.

wish i had known the regedit method, i mean i know off regedit but never removed keys like that, only a select few, or changing some values. the way i did was reindstall windows, not for the controller though, i had to reindstall it so i can split the drive into two drives then install winxp on each so i can play beta and import.

Ugh, I did what you suggested and I couldn't get it to work. I went into my registry, did a search for "PSX/USB" came out with a few results, usually by the ones, deleted them, then I got to a page with about 12 of them and couldn't delete it. I kept getting an error. I compared the page with a person who isn't having any problems because they never installed the drivers and they said it looked the same. Now, i'm really confused. I got the page in my control panel to change back to the OS mode and all but whenever I go to my FFXI config and click "Gamepad" it closes/crashes.

I even tried deleting these entries in Safe-mode, but still nothing. I can't even get my controller to show up in my Device Manager, and yes, I hit the refresh button a bunch of times.

I had the same problem when I installed the drivers to a gamepad I already had, gravis eliminator. When I uninstalled the drivers it worked fine. Only problem is right now though I don't get any rumble effects, I don't know why.

Kiba - Man, sorry to hear. I guess I should have posted a warning with my method. I'm not sure how technically saavy you are or not but I'm sure you know to be very cautious when removing keys outta your registry. Its a good idea to export your registry before you do mess with it (again, I guess I shoulda included that in my explanation - thought it was a given) that way if things get f'ed up you can just import it again. That would at least allow you to start over and get the device to appear again in your Device Manager - don't know about not being able to remove the keys... haven't had the problem. You might wanna try a third party reg editor, I'm sure they're out there. It might let ya override whatever restriction regedit is putting on ya.

What converter are you using? "PSX/USB" was just the name that my driver came up as, you would have to do a search for whatever your driver appeared as when you installed it.

No worries, I got a friend to help me with it and it's working perfectly now. Instead of doing a search for "PSX/USB" I did "PSX" and found the real keys that needed to go. Everything is working now, thanks.

Glad to hear you got it going man.

I edited my initial post to make it clearer for people using this method to get the name of their driver and to be sure to back up the registry.
