Fishing in Valkurum
Hey people,

I have done a bit of fishing in Windurst and am about to move to the Valkurum Dunes. The fish I have been concentrating on are Bastore Sardines with lugworm, and Moat Carp with little worms (and a cheap and nasty rod, that breaks sometimes).

So my question is this, which rod and bait should I take with me to Valkurum, and what fish can I catch?

Thanks,

(Cawrclen, lvl 10 WAR)

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
Dont fish in valk at lv10, if you get to the beach without dieing youll probably fish up a mob you cant kill and get dead very quickly.

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
Additionally, the shores of Valkurm Dunes have Arrowwood Logs, which will break your rods if you aren't careful (pretty much anything except Ebisu, Lu Shang's Fishing Rod, or a Composite Rod will break).

You CAN fish there if you avoid pulling up any bites that look like this:

"Something caught the hook!!!"
(note the three "!"s)

This is accompanied by the faster fishing music indicating something heavy on the line. In Valkurm, all such results are Arrowwood Logs or monsters, so if you're confident you won't accidentally try to pull those up, you can fish there.

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
You may try this webpage:

http://www.clanwind.com/ffxi/fishing/

You can search for the info on fish, fishing skill, location, fishing rod, lute/bait, etc. Even though the database in this webpage is a bit old, but it is still valid for for beginner's fishing.

*added*

If you are trying to catch Bastore Sardines and Moat Carp, I am assuming your fishing skill is below 11? I think skill-cap for Moat Carp is 11 (you won't receive any skill up from Moat Carp if your fishing skill is above 11).

In Valkurum Dunes, there are Cobalt Jellyfish (skill cap below 5), Bastore Sardines (skill cap around 7?), Greedie (skill cap around 13?), Quus (skill cap around 18), Shall Shell (skill cap at 53) ... If your main job is at level 10, and if you insist on going to Valkurum Dunes, I suggest you to stay inside Selbina to avoid mobs, big fish and monsters.

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
So is it ok to fish in Selbina at lvl 10? I don't want to hook a dangerous mob.

I'm sure my fishing skill is only 2 or 3 cos I haven't been doing much.

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
At that level, I would highly suggest fishing around your starter city or even in the city. All starter cities have fresh and salt water areas to catch whichever you like in them. This would save you on getting killed on your way to Selbina and get you plenty of skill ups.

I will be going to Selbina for exp parties in the Dunes anyway, I was just hoping to do a little fishing while I waited for invites.

Guess I should stick to Moat Carp in Windy for a while (until I get skill to 10 right?)

Mmm... if that's the case, get a nice solid rod like a Halcyon and a sabiki rig and just fish for Bastore Sardines (cap at 10) and Quus (cap at 19) in Selbina. Don't spend a lot of time doing it, though - basically do it while looking for party. Those fish aren't worth much, but they'll give you skillups. There are no monsters or arrowwood logs in Selbina to break a Halcyon, though weaker rods may break on other items in the water.

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
I would suggest catching Bastore Sardines in salt-water (in Port Windurst or a the cliff at the south sea outside of windurst), until level 7 skill. Using Lugworm is okay for Bastore Sardine, in case you lost the catch or your line breaks, not much to lose. At around kill 6 or 7, you may try to catch Moat Carp in flesh-water (in town, or river/pond/lake outside of Windurst). You may skill up on Moat Carp until 9 to 11 and complete your first guild exam (your skill will not go beyond level 11 until you finish your 1st guild exam).

Re: Fishing in Valkurum
Bringing a fishing rod to the dunes is great for while looking for a party. Most people start on the Highlands side of the Dunes at level 10/11 with lizards and there's not much water on that side. Once you start on snippers at 13/14 (preferably 14 so your party can handle them easily), then you'd have closer access to Selbina.

I mistook your original post to mean you were just going to Selbina for the fishing. I should just try to remember that not everyone is a fishaholic. Heck, the only reason I agreed to getting my Kazham pass so quickly on Lakshmi was so I could take my main character there to do more fishing.

I would recommend getting a hume or halcyon rod so you avoid getting the "Whatever you caught was too small for this rod" message.
