let the payers chose if they want it or not and i know many that do want it on xbox

You can talk to other 360 users, but remember, it's not just 360 users playing FFXIV. PS3 is supposedly getting skype next year though. I hope that rumor is true.

That's what the skype is for. Some guy from Sony who is an anonymous squealer for PSN updates said on the forums that there was a reason why there was no cross game chat from the start because of EA or something.. I couldn't find the posts so I am just relaying what I was told.. And they didn't remember exactly what was said either.

Party chat isn't vital to gaming though.. but.. I like the idea of it.

Paying $4 more a month to endure rage-quitters and mouth-breathers doesn't sound like a tremendous value to me.

You only trust them when they say that their dad or brother works there. Especially if they worked at nintendo when everybody found out about Mew on Pokemon.

Thats fine if the guy really does work for SOny, and is givning people on the forums leaked info, but I want to hear when he gets fired and sued for it as well.

I just sorta skimmed this so here's my comments on what I saw:

1. No currently operating MMO(that I know of) uses or supports voice chat. There was one canned project to try this but it never got very far. I could also see voice chat being annoying in an MMO and most of the time text is easier to ignore than several people yelling in your ear!(XXX for sale!)

2. Xbox live is a closed system which is pretty lame for MS to do. They let limited amounts of PC players in on same games but don't see the logic in letting you play anyone. My opinion of it is also very low because it's really no better than Xfire or Gamespy Classic(services that let you play PC games online for free and are advertising supported) but they still charge you the $50 a year rip off fee. Almost all the live features can be done of PC using other programs for no cost...(so if you had a choice you could play for free...but you're stuck!)

3. SE said they were trying to hash it out with Microsoft. I don't know where this is gonna go but that was the last word I heard on the subject.

4. I'm not a big fan of using KBs and mice to control a game nowadays(this goes with the PC gamer thing). FFXI has some nice options for setting the game up to play just like the PS2 or if you get really creative you can make it act like the 360 version. I'm sure FF14 will have some nice controller setup options as well and anyone's Dual Shock 2/3 clone should work. Once I set my controller up right and have the same controls as my console it doesn't even seem like I'm playing on a PC anymore....

I'm pretty sure WoW has voice chat built in, under the Sound menu there is a Voice Chat option. Granted the codecs are truely truely awefull and there is little to no protection on the channels you create but hey, a totally useless voice chat program that nobody uses anyway because the third party once are just so massively better does exist.

Given WoWs status as the most popular MMO in the world evaaaaar and still nobody uses the free voice chat, why would S.E bother when they know full well the 3rd party apps will always be selected because they are better, safer and most importantly from the users point of view not under the control of S.E.
