This thread was cool when I thought I was playing devil's advocate to DakAttack's blanket agreement to the articles. But he was just being sarcastic in the worst way (The Internet Way). I'ma get people defensive for this, but it seriously feels like a lot of responses in this thread are just bashing because other people are bashing and they're the cool people. So now this thread sucks. I find myself wanting to defend the articles: Not all of his points are good, but it was a pretty interesting read (I skimmed the 1st 3 or so). The branching storyline concept would be a lot of legwork, but a lot of it really could happen and he's right -- we'd be much more involved in the game's story. He says he wants to see the job system re-envisioned. It's nice that he feels that way, but that's seriously what we're getting. So it's moot. And yeah, 42 types of crabs. If you guys didn't read that and instantly agree with him, you should UPS your balls to S-E headquarters.

To be honest the links were pretty tl;dr. I read the first bits and said "fuck, I'm not reading all of this."

And the whole thing about people (probably RMT PLs at first) de-leveling level sync mules and making areas go under beastmen control... I'm sure SE had no idea that level sync would result in that kind of abuse. Sometimes the player base is way too clever when figuring out how to abuse stuff.

While there are "42 types of crabs"...it's because crabs are a common, everyday creature. It's just...there...and not really a main opponent, more of a set piece. All the zones have their small mobs, medium mobs and big mobs, and they get bigger the higher you go. It's just natural to have more of a small, unassuming species of animal walking around all over the world then it is to have hordes of giant dragons at every turn. Any place with a warm climate and decent sized body of water should have crabs or something near them...it's wild life.

I only read a few sizable chunks. He makes a lot of good points, but there's quite a few things I just don't agree with either. But hey, it's a blog, it's an opinion. Guess we'll see if anything listed by him comes true soon enough. |

Personally, seeing level 76 rabbits was demoralizing. They were a bad choice of enemy and probably a Monty Python reference stretched too far (see: Vorpal Bunny.) I guess they could compromise and make wild areas mostly low to mid level, or segregate the stronger enemies to their own sections of the map.

Personally, I don't like the idea of fighting animals. One of the biggest gripes I have about RPG video games in general is with the sheer amount of animals you kill in the course of a quest, mission, or an adventure. In FFXI SE has provided you with many different NPCs to level off of, yet we RARELY pick on humanoids. That's mostly our fault. In WoW, wherever you go there are animals attempting to force you into fighting them. Sometimes, it's two different species AND a wtfhumanoid ganging up on you. When did they make this pact? Who's the real bad guy in WoW? YOU, because you're accepting quests that have you beat the ungodly shit out of animals all day. It's so bad, that they're all working against you now. Oblivion was bad too. I just want to ride my horse through a forest without attracting the mindless attention of a slew of forest animals including what looks like giant mossy sloths that can run their asses off. So, in summary, let's kill more humanoids, please. |

This is fantasy, not RL, a bunny can kill an epically equipped god, if the designer chooses to.

Oh hush. Fantasy or not, it's still stupid. Must we go over the whole suspension of disbelief thing once more?

it depends on context. If they're regular rabbits (as they are in FFXI because SE NEVER MAKES NEW FUCKING SKINS OR BOTHERS TO INVENT BACKSTORY), then yes, it gets quite old. However, there is plenty of legitimate reason for a fantasy to have a bit of the absurd; the killer bunny rabbit brigade, the psychopathic bambi. It has to be well implemented though. |
