it could go either way. I'm pretty sure they want to surpass themselves from what they did before, so there might be more jobs available at the start, or there are more unlockable later on. Or depending on how the testing and completion of the jobs are working out, they might throw in a few at first and see how players use them, then load up the rest.

I would guess they want some jobs quest related like before, so there is a good chance not all of them will be available right away, even if they are already included.

I been wondering about the first hours playing FFXIV. Everyone may feel pressured to level up and reach the current cap while there is still a squillion other people to party with. But I think I might take my time unless I run into people that are aiming on progressing together that day, even if its just exploring and questing.

yes-- if they don't go the Materia/Junction/Sphere Grid/License Board (let's admit it, the odds are against us here) route and keep the job system, the jobs will probably still play like what they are.

But then, imagine how broken it would be to take a Red Mage from FF5 and drop him into FF11. Or a NIN from FF11 and drop him into FF6. Even when things stay largely the same, what look like small differences on the surface can lead to giant unbalancing; it's simply silly to imagine at this point that things will be similar enough to start basing FF14's battle system on FF11's. What might be a big improvement to FF11 could totally break 14.

I'm going to hope to get into the beta, and I'll definitely have it at launch. Playing a new MMO is a pretty wonderful experience, even with the inevitable bugs and adjustments. Exploration of a new world and a new system is so much fun!

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010

With FFXI being the first MMO for me (scrap that, first major video game that I've played), I am super excited to be able to start this one right from the release! I want to explore and learn and start from scrap all by myself without my husband telling me what needs to be done

It's going to be awesome :D

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010

I registered at the official FFXIV site, but do you think they'll only invite Japanese to the beta? well there could be NA invites too. but how would we get invited, through the official site?
well there will be a closed beta unless it's started already. and then possibly an open beta (even xbox360 had an open beta).
well not sure but the beta invites might start..hmmm not sure when. SE revealed FFXIV but they are still leaning on promoting FFXIII until its finally released in Japan this year.

Summoner's "air strike" style of play in the offline games is problematic in terms of job balance in the MMO space. It works great for offline, but its a terrible idea for online.

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010

I remember when I first started ragnarok back when it was free and brand new, people were internally lost and they loved it lol. I agree with Murphie and Andromache I will be doing my best to get it on launch, wel;l as long as the requirements are epic for pc. A new video card I can see since I am using onboard right now but if I have to make the jump from dual to quad core processor I might have to wait on the game.

---------- Post added at 10:00 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 AM ----------

Well if they run it like the Front mission online beta the game will be complete in it's entirety with all areas they planned unlocked, classes, and full in game tutorials running. Which actually I heard was a bit abnormal but I only beta tested small company western games and those were action based. But if that means that the beta will be a 5-7 month thing. Then an event for server closing, and then the optional practice of transfering characters back to the players when retail hits stores. So I would guess that they are so far into development that the beta should star poping up around Tokyo Game Show time.

Judging by the video, specifically the boat scene, it's clearly done at least partially in the in game engine, if not battle system. With the way the fighting is active, and the monsters swerve away from Bubble Mithra, I wouldn't be surprised to see FF14 as a KH-style action RPG. Summons in that were even more useless there than in FFXI, though.

On FF13, keep in mind that FFX and FFXI had less than one year of separation in Japan; which is around what 13/14 will be. Also keep in mind that X2 was less than a year after FFXI. With the Fabula Nova Crystalis, I think SE was probably expecting a pretty crowded release schedule; possibly intentionally like they had on the PS2.

Dunno where this half came from, but main series Final Fantasy games don't normally come out that close together, so they would have to be radical departures from the current XIII brand to move on to XIV so soon.

I very much saw FFXIII taking up most of the FF pie this generation, now with XIV added to the mix, that's as about as far as I see it going sans expansions. Three FFXIII games, maybe more. FFXIV and expansions. After that I think they can start moving on some remakes again.

FFXIV releasing next year does kind of put the ACP product model into context now.

And they're perfectly capable of doing a graphical update for PC/360/PS3
They are, and since we have the same races that is what I am assuming they are doing, while tossing in access to some new place. And I think it would make sense to a certain degree, providing that the new game goes it's own seperate way from FFXI and not just be some mere expansion similar to ToAU, but it's own world.

And to a certain extent, if they do that then yes, I wouldn't mind being able to transfer my character. I just spent the last however many years getting to the point where I have almost two jobs at 75 and can make gil easily and in general, can take it easy, have fun, and actually help my LS with random stuff when I have time rather than be the one asking for help. If FFXIV requires a fee to play (and I'm sure it will) I'd rather not pay to play two online games, so I'll have to pick one or the other and the decision to stop playing FFXI will not be made lightly. Not being able to transfer my character isn't some big deal breaker, it's just depending on how they present the new game, something that could be nice and could make some sense, because right now it's looking to me like a new continent rather than seperate world. Eorzea seems to be the name of one of the gods rather than the name of the world itself, so it could still be Vana'diel.

Also, just watched the youtube video and that sure looked like Leviathan in the trailer, could this be the world that is created when the avatars awake? I seem to remember something about the avatars dreaming, and there being big unknown changes to the world if they were to awake.

Also, I really wouldn't mind if they added some kind of Junction system to the game, I rather enjoyed that in FFVIII. And I would like to see some better job balancing if possible. I freaking love Blu/Dnc in campaign, but all parties want is Blu/Nin, and while /Nin is enjoyable in it's own way it is not the way I want to exp in parties 100% of the time. And while I'm glad that /Sam got perks for us two handed users, I think it tells you something when /Sam gets it's own form of Utsusemi.

re: E3 2009: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Coming in 2010

EDIT: for context, I'm replying to my BFFBBQ.

That's what I'm saying, I don't think they're viewing them as one project that they do, complete, release, promote for a few weeks, and then move on. I think they're viewing them as new sub-franchises, in the same way we see FFXI, FFTactics, Crystal Chronicles, and so on treated; less like Ivalice Alliance or Compilation of VII. As being Final Fantasy, but not competitors.

The release schedule, to me, looks like it will be similar to the early PS2 years; FFX (13), then around 7-10 months later, FFXI (14), and then a few months after that, X-2 (vs13). After that, I expect there will probably be a cooling period. Possibly another new DQ or KH game. Unless the generation is a short one, I'd be surprised if they didn't get in either FFXV, another 13 game, or a major remake (FF7, probably)

Basically, the difference in soloability between FFXI and WoW is the grind to level cap.
Which is all I really want. The ability to grind to cap, (and it always will be a grind and that doesn't bother me) in whatever way best suits my current mood, without it being exponentially slower or annoying. Grind on the whole doesn't bother me so long as it doesn't become tedium. There is a rather wide difference. People have some bizarre impression of LotRO being 'solo focused' simply because of the same thing. You can grind to cap alone, at just about an equal rate. Most quests are solo but there's large instances at every range (Great Barrows, Fornost, Garth Agarwen at early levels, the raids at the later) for full groups with nice gear drops if you're of the mind. You can also buddy up at any point if you feel inclined, and the major story points of the 'Epic' questline are all grouped. And some of them are notoriously hard on the level of some of the CoP, to the point that once you get through them, no one ever wants to do them again. Unless someone puts a gun to my head or a very close friend -of which there are none left who do- needs Battle for 21st Hall done again, I will never touch it on any alt.

Therein lies a place where LotRO actually overlaps with XI in annoyance. I know it's the main story. I know it should probably need other people with you. But it really does get to be a nuisance trying to find a group just to finish the story. LotRO works around it, in that all of the story isn't 'gated.' There's places where you have to go in order, and then there's places you can pick it up and skip what's before, in case you did get stuck, or you leveled past it and plan to go back at a later date. The first 4 or 5 books of Volume One can be done in any order. The last large chunk are all linked, so far as I know, though. Vol. 2 goes through 6 in order, but 7 (which came with Lothlorien) can be taken up before you finish 6, which is a good thing, since both 5 and 6 have hard fights in them that require people to actually think their jobs through and listen to direction and morons are not exclusive to any MMO. Even with a competent group, 5-5 and 6-8 (or is it 9?) can be tough.

Anything 'endgame' in LotRO is group. Some of it 6 man, some 12+. Supposedly Book 8 has a new full raid coming. So in reality, it's about the same thing. You can solo to cap. And crafted gear is more or less comparable (not the same, but more than sufficient) to anything dropped in raids, bar the fact that it can't have Radiance if you're talking about 60 kit. But it certainly isn't a solo game if you want to finish the story (and there's some neat rewards for that) or do anything related to the endgame. But if you don't care on either point, you can still feel you have progressed at a decent rate, and have achieved something. And if you do want to do those things, they are there for you to do.

Oh, and as someone was talking about earlier: RP. We can actually RP. :p Hell, I play on the English RP server. I love it. <3 I did hate the fact that there was next to no RP in XI. So we made a little Linkshell for the few we knew who wanted to, and RP'd on random days. Bucked canon in some places, but we had fun so eh.
