My Mood: | Re: Looking for Christian LS I was attempting to provide an alternative to Kailea's thought of "banning" new people who post in old threads. Mine isn't a very good one, but banning new people is a little severe imo. The only thing i find annoying about necroposts, is when somebody tries to provide new arguements about things that have been fixed in updates since the time of the original posts, or in old guides that are out of date and no longer apply.

Funny how people let things bother them only because they want these things to bother them. The idea of a person looking for a Christian LS. People looking for information from a thread and commenting on it. Aside from the oh-so-important and shameless bumping of FFXIV topics, what else is there really to talk about. SE hasn't really given us much to work with and couldn't even be bother to make a news post celebrating the fact Shantotto is in Dissidia. I mean, really, I'm sorry this is disrupting your constant refreshing of the forum's main page, but unless you can think of a better topic and post or reply to it, the new users are free to replay to what they want, even if no one is going to respond to them. Maybe this guy will find that LS anyway. |

Well I would hope he found the right LS for him by now. But even with the topic being old, who cares? You're right, it gives us something to argue about

I think it might be reasonable to pop up an extra screen saying "This thread has not been posted to in X weeks/months" and maybe a list of reasons not to revive old threads (if there are any) or alternatives to doing so, when the last post on the thread is over a certain age. (At least a suggestion to read through the thread and see if what you're going to say has already been said might be nice, if anyone would follow it.) But obviously it would require more work from programmers. Alternatively or in addition, old *posts* could be marked on screen somehow (a different color background or something), to make it obvious both that thread necromancy has occurred and where the dividing line between old and recent posts is. I don't think an outright ban would be a good idea because there are sometimes good reasons to bring back old threads; if you don't allow it as such, then the old stuff will just have to be cut and pasted to start a "new" thread, and such a Frankenthread isn't really preferable to old-fashioned necromancy anyway. Avoiding necromancy can lead to excessive thread duplication (and hiding old threads from new members is almost guaranteed to do so). (Since thread necromancy itself usually comes up as a threadjack, it is ironically a frequently duplicated thread that might benefit from consolidation into one old thread revived as necessary.) If people want to talk about X, and there is already a thread about X, they can do it in the old thread or in a new thread. Both approaches have their downsides but IMO, necromancy is usually the least-bad solution. I think necrowhiners are usually people who are tired of talking about X, and therefore don't want anyone else to talk about it because *they* don't want to talk about it. There are a variety of terms that could be applied to describe this behavior, some more polite than others. But whatever you call it, I don't think that behavior pattern should actually control what other people are allowed to talk about. (Nobody else commenting on the irony of a thread about Christianity rising from the grave? It did take a little longer than 3 days, though.)
