I just know you're going to be among the more active people in here... so I figured I'd jump the gun.

The thread is just like the title suggests, an open discussion on Gaming (and occasionally non-gaming) PC construction. In light of the upcoming release of FFXIV: ARR, I figure a few people are likely launching the benchmark and testing their current rigs against the standards for the game. That being the case, some of your results may or may not be what you're looking for. My specs, for example, were enough to run the game consistently on high settings. That's not enough for me. I need to be able to run it on Ultra High or I'm simply not doing it right.

So here I am... as I usually am every 2 years or so... browsing the latest and greatest in affordable PC parts to tear my PC down and rebuild it from the ground up. I'm just wondering what you guys use... or WOULD use if you were going to be building up again. I'm likely capping myself off at a $2,500 - 3,000 limit... which is absurdly generous considering what I'm willing to spend on a new truck, lol.

So what are your current specs / dream specs? Within reason, of course. Try and keep your specs under $3,000... and realistic.

Nvidea Geforce or Radeon for your Graphics card? And do you use more than 1?

SSD or Normal (But High volume) for your HDD?

Single, Double, Quad, 6 or 8 core?

How many gigs of DDR3 is enough for you?

What's your ideal GHz limit for your processor without being greedy?

CrossfireX?

Multiple Displays?

Multiple Desktops run through Hydra?

4, 6, 8 or more Gigs of Ram? (lets face it... 2 just won't cut it for even the simplest things anymore)

How high is your power supply?

Brands and models you stick by for peripherals? Logitech? Razor? Something else?

Whatever else you can think of. I'm curious to hear about other people's building efforts. Sometimes you guys clue me in to some stuff I never would have thought to look up.

I'm personally torn between running a GeForce GTX 680... or Radeon HD 7970.

I want a 120Gig SSD for boot-up with a 1TB HDD for storage.

I'd love to run both Fan and Liquid cooling... but DIY liquid cooling builds always scare the hell out of me. If anything, I'd have to defer to a friend to build it in for me... or simply order out a case with detailed, foolproof DIY Liquid Cooling installation instructions for me to feel comfortable tackling it.

I want to run an AMD 8 core / 4.0GHz processor with compatible (still have to look it up... socket AM3 probably) mobo.

At least 1000 watt power supply. I run 750 right now and I still NEED MOAR POWAH!

I want 16 gigs of DDR3 memory... although I can probably cut that down substantially to curb the overall cost.

I also really don't want to have to do it... but I'll probably have to use Windows 8 (ugh...)

All in all I think that keeps my price under 1,500. If I max out the RAM like I (shouldn't) want to and double up the graphics cards... then I'm looking at about 2,000. Assuming I keep it to 1 card and curb my absurd RAM desires, I can probably squeeze in a new monitor to replace the 2 I currently use. I'd settle for something 24" or bigger if the resolution and clarity was top notch.

So let's call it $2,000. I think in all it would run me about that much... give or take. If possible, I'd also try to sell off my old monitors, Graphics Cards, Ram and spare parts to ease the cost a little bit. The HDD stays with me though... NEVER sell your HDD unless you know what you're doing and wipe that shit clean of every last scrap of info. To make a long story short, they will be able to download the PC version for free. Those that want the PS3 version will have to purchase it.
If you bought the collector’s edition of Final Fantasy XIV you will get the digital items included in the new collector’s edition of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for free via Moogle Mail: those are the Helm of Light, the Baby Behemoth Minion, the Behemoth Barding, and the Coeurl Mount.
In addition to this Legacy Players (if you don’t know what a Legacy Player is, chances are that you aren’t one) will get to take part in the game’s early access before launch.
If you want to purchase multiple copies of the PS3 version, you’ll have to prepare multiple PSN account, as each PSN account can be linked only to a single copy. If you also have a PC version of the game, once you register your PS3 copy you’ll be able to log in with the characters from your old PC version as well (but not at the same time with both platforms).
There will also be a Collector’s Edition Digital Upgrade Service that will allow players to upgrade their Final Fantasy XIV standard edition to collector’s edition status (for a yet unspecified fee) and receive the items mentioned above.
So there you have it. While you should definitely consider all of this a rumor until officially confirmed, the floodgates are probably about to open. Personally I’m guessing we’ll see a release date set around August the 1st, but this is just my personal speculation based on the elements we have so far.

yes it is nice they are designing the controls so controller has access to more shortcuts, but keyboard cannot be matched
in text communication as well as more expanded controls options (which PS2 and X360 has proven that FFXI is more fun using both controller and keyboard instead of just controller).

So yes FFXIV ARR will still be very functional and playable with PS3 controller,
but for the most optimal play experience, FFXIV ARR must support keyboard on PS3 too (not be like Diablo III where it will not have keyboard support for PS3 version, but it can get
away with that because it's an ARPG, not an MMORPG. )

Well the good news is that the text chat window is confirmed for PS3 version, but I think they have to make sure to support USB keyboards for PS3, besides a software keyboard
(which is really a last resort if ppl don't have keyboard).

So in that method, PS3 version could be 80% more comfy with controller instead of mouse,

I'm guessing its a game in the vein of Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star Online given its multiplayer focus, but I dig the look of it and the post-apocalyptic setting even if the character designs are a bit bland. That needs work, but I think the trailer is nice otherwise. At the very least its a Sony game on my radar for a change because Soul Sacrifice, Killzone Mercenary and Tearaway are doing nothing for me.

Might also reconsider renaming it Panopticon because that actually sounds cooler. I'm on Xbox360, I have Comcast Cable Internet at up to 25MB/s. My XBL gamertag and laptop are connected perfectly to the internet.

I recently came back from not playing Final Fantasy XI for almost 2 years. I had to go through 6 hours of bullsh*t to pay off past due amounts and transfer my POL ID.

Got ALL of that taken care of, so I think I can just pay for my content ID and play. I log in, go to "Membership" from the Viewer and it tells me I have to pay on the Square Enix site. So it boots me to the Log In screen and I get on my laptop to pay the monthly charges while I reconnect.

And now all of the sudden, SE won't accept my CC info (need to pay $12.95 USD and have over $500.00 USD in my bank account) and all I get from the Playonline Viewer is "POL-1160" now.

Reset my router/modem twice, looking around SE for answers, now I'm trolling around trying to find a possible fix. I would get a hold of SE but it's Friday night and I have to wait until Monday morning.

Any advice is welcomed.

On another note, I was wondering if there were any LS on Bahamut that are currently accepting new members? I'm almost 100% sure my LS has dissolved by now. I have an 80THF/40NIN so I have plenty of experience to lvl, quest, dynamis, etc.

As soon as I get these problems figured out, I hope to rejoin Bahamut and have the same fun I had for almost 10 years playing this before. :)

First things first, I make actually more an hour than last year, but our overtime was gutted and the tax laws in place starting in 2013 combined have made my paychecks really crappy. On a 40 hour work week, I'm seeing about $80 less per paycheck every two weeks, which does hurt. And let's not even talk about the overtime I'm no longer getting. :cry:

So basically, I have a fuckton of student loan debt. I also have a vehicle loan. I pay rent, utilities, internet, a phone bill, insurance, and one department store credit card with a fairly low (comparatively) balance. I can give actual numbers if anyone is truly interested/is an accountant.

This month I am looking at taking home about $1320 with expenses around $1840. Part of this is from being so behind on things, my insurance is actually up for cancellation if I don't get caught up, I paid them $150 to keep them going for now but I'm in trouble if I don't come up with about $600 by mid-June. My usual expenses (not counting food and gas) are usually about $1600, so I still come up short. Unfortunately at this point there is no way for me to not live beyond my means.

Things I have considered:

  1. Selling the truck. However, I owe more than I would get and the transit system here is not good.
  2. Prostitution. I am only partially kidding.
  3. Second job - I've tried this, however, I'm not terribly flexible right now with my work schedule in constant flux.
  4. Calling my dad and bumming but I don't think he has it.
  5. Pawning some things, but I don't have anything I can sell. Let me rephrase, I don't have anything I can sell that will make me enough money and that I am willing to give up.
  6. I crochet and I could sell some afghans I make, but it's summer, Florida, not really gonna work.
  7. Re-enlisting. Though I may go National Guard or something.


Things I have done:

  1. Called the student loan company. I am starting school today, but because some of my loans are private, I can't defer them. This pissed me off.
  2. Set up an extension with the auto loan company, basically I paid 1/3 payment last month and 2/3 this month, next month I'm back to full.
  3. Changed the due date on my internet bill. I am taking online courses so I can't turn off the internet.
  4. Lowered my cell phone plan. This saved me like 6 bucks.
  5. Taken out a $300 employee advance that will get deducted (interest and fee free) from my paycheck over 6 pay periods.



I have decent credit (for now) but I don't think I can take out a loan and I will not apply for a credit card that will help me in the short-term but hurt me in the long run. (Like, I could pay my rent on it this month, but I'm gonna be paying on it month after month and that's just another expense.)

Basically, I'm in a bind and I am not sure what I can do at this point. If I were to lose my apartment, I have nowhere to go but the streets. Every billing company I can work with, I've already called and worked with and I won't be able to get any more extensions. So the option becomes to not pay something and see what happens or come up with the money.

I do anticipate getting Chapter 33 GI Bill benefits but I have no idea when, as my status is still processing. When that hits, it will fix everything, but I have to assume that I won't get it by the end of the month.

I also am starting the new job soonish but I won't see paychecks from that for at least a few weeks out.

I am not looking for handouts. If anyone knows a way I can make some extra cash that I haven't considered, I'd like to hear it. The second job is still an option but I need to figure out what my schedule is going to be and catch my stride with school before I can try to make commitments elsewhere.

I'm not 100% sure why I up and decided to sell most of it. Just want to quote one specific part of this that scares me;

It's not much but it's a start - I say it's worth it, to have to pay a little more for goods and services if it means people at home have a job and we have properly quality assurance.

Just like with TV's and computers I'm assuming there are certain staples you need to have with a new camcorder, but I am not sure of any of them. All I'd be looking for is HD, a good zoom, and a HDMI hook up for the computer or directly to our TV. Rendezvous Zone is an established linkshell (from Excalibur server) with veteran and new players plus more to come. Very important: We don't have a server where we'll be relocating to. Most of us come from Excalibur but due to the lack of information at this moment about how the servers will be distributed we will have to wait for a final decision on our new home. Now what we do know is that since most of us are Legacy members , we will not be able to choose a new server but new players can choose a server that Legacy people will be allowed to go to. Also it is very important to point out that this group consist of people with a life outside of the game and we will respect it. The LS division will be for very casual players or not interested in FC and the FC will have players which will be a little more than casual or mid-core.

So to force myself to change, I intend to make it a social commitment. Book clubs are a pretty old-fashioned construct, so I guess I should explain just in case. Members take turns suggesting books, which all of the participants then read, and get together every week or two to discuss what they read and choose a new book. If you're interested, say so and post what kind of books you'd be bringing to the table. I'm thinking we can decide randomly who picks first, they post a few options, and we vote on which one to go with.

When I do read, it's rarely purely for entertainment, so my lists are going to include popular non-fiction like Reality is Broken by Jane McGonigal, A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasir, The Honest Truth about Dishonesty by Dan Ariely, Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error by Kathryn Schulz, A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking—all books I've been intending to read forever. Recent fiction I've enjoyed has been by John Scalzi, Jim Butcher, and Stephen Baxter. Look at that list of drops and f'ing weep.

There's also new crafted weapons made with the stuff that drops from Delve, all over 200 base damage (except the h2h) and this is just 1 month after releasing skirmish.

It gets worse too, apparently SE is deleting posts and even banning people in an attempt to keep the info from getting out on the official forums. Matsui has (or so I'm told) apologized for basically obsoleting content he had just released with this new one, and doesn't have a clue as to what to do about Relics, Mythics and Empyreans which are all absolutely shat upon by these new Delve Weapons - weapons that take significantly less time and effort to obtain.
