There's always that one guy in every office who has to have everything top of the line just so he can have one-sided conversations with you about it while you're trying to work.

I don't really get the new formats either..not just for buring stuff but for playing it back. For most of us DVD is good enough and most of us don't have HDTVs...they are still abit too much $$$ for most people...

See that's the thing, we're still in the transition. HDTV is quickly becoming the new standard. As such, better models will continue to be made with the older ones (which would be today/next year's models) getting more affordable.

And there's a distinct difference between standard and HD. It's not quite so discernible in movies, but you can sure as hell see the difference in games.

Don't believe me? Take a look at the Mass Effect trailer in Standard and then in HD (or play the Bioshock demo or what have you) and tell me you still can't see the difference.

The other thing is DVD's already upscale movies to I believe 540i, which is above SD but still not HD.

The confusion is over on Paramount/Dreamwork's surprising move. Ars Technica has the scoop.

Because they were smart enough to invest into every possible standard imaginable, much to the chagrin of their jealous rivals...

However, at what cost, is still to play out in the end.

Re: Paramount and Dreamworks go HD-DVD Exclusive, Uselessly Extend Format War

The DVD Forum approved Toshiba's triple layer 51 GB HD-DVD disc. Now all the HD-DVD retards are going to be all "OURS HAS 1 GB MORE THAN YOURS" while Blu-Ray morons are going to be all "THAT 1 GB DOESN'T MATTER LOL".

Meanwhile, I'll laugh all the way to the bank as I continue buying standard definition DVD box sets and movie releases for 2/3 the price. <3 this format war.

Re: Paramount and Dreamworks go HD-DVD Exclusive, Uselessly Extend Format War

Wow, totally missed this thread, sorry Pai.

Oh the things people will do for ungodly sums of money. HD-DVD has a snowball's chance in hell of winning this format war, so apparently Toshiba has decided they like the idea of "If we can't win this, then noone will." I think BD is still the most likely to win, but now a winner at all seems less likely and if this goes on into next year, its gonna be a stalemate and we'll get to wait a few more years for a successful way of watching movies in HD. I really like the BD movies I have and will still occasionally buy them, but I slowed up with what I used to buy on DVD and now just can't get back in the habit. I have been buying lots of tv shows on dvd, though lately.
Personally, I bought a nice HD tv and a ps3 and really enjoy watching movies on it, 1080p truly is a sight.
Anyway, I think this whole format war just gets more and more ridiculous.
Still looking forward to a few releases, namely the new Uber release of Blade Runner.

Er...Toshiba is one of the companies that developed HD-DVD. They're...the complete opposite of being BD.

Yeah, it is confusing, and hilarious to think about. Toshiba is the body behind HD-DVD, at war with BD, which is heavily backed by Sony...yet Sony, IBM and Toshiba worked together on CELL, the backbone of the PS3 architecture.
