Well it makes sense to make megatron something other then a pistol like he originally was because a pistol isn't all that threatening in comparison. Out of all his multiple incarnations over the years an 'alien jet' isn't all that surprising. Sad they screwed up the face though.

Were you expecting them to look exactly like they did in the original transformers cartoon? If so that's kind of a naive thing to do. There have been numerous versions of all the transformers through out the years, why would they not change for the live action movie? It seems they wanted to add a more complex and organic design to the movie to give it more of an appeal on the big screen. Megatron does look like a very intimidating and very alien, which my guess is what they were aiming for. You have to take into account the fact they're targeting more then just hardcore fans and want to bring in people who don't even know much about transformers as well. I will admit though soundwave should have been included and bumble bee should have stayed a VW bug(they probably had lisencing issues or something on that) but otherwise it seems pretty cool so far.

One thing that surprises me though is that the new versions don't exactly seem very 'toyetic'. As of late any of the cartoons had the character design be extremely close to the toy design, including their transformation processes. But these new designs don't exactly look like they can be made into toys easily, which there still will be regardless. I find this kind of odd seeing as how the entire Transformers series started based on numerous japanese toy robots being blended into one show, one would assume they'd try coming full circle with them. But then again they are releasing updated versions of old G1 designs, including bumble bee as a bug and megatron as a gun, so I guess they'll let that fit into the 'retro' niche.

numerous versions warrant changes? so if they started giving dragoons pink cloth armor in one of the next ff, then they made a movie afterwards and used that pink cloth, its naive to think 'wtf happened to the cool wyrm helm and purple/blue armor??'

armada did a better job at this than this movie will be. and the only series that strayed a lot was beastwars. THAT was supposed to be a different story line and idea all together. THIS is not.

so actually its not naive. what's naive is that they actually thing they are making it more appealing by butchering the very thing that made transformers a hit. functional designs. when you transformer optimus, or starcream, you know what part is from where. when you watch the show, you can transform your optimus in the same way they do on screen. theres no magic in the originals (well, almost no magic, most guns and stuff come out of no where), everything is functional like the toys.

they have effectively killed that. if you didnt see that the camero was supposed to be bumblebee, could you guess wtf he was? he could be a giant pooh bear for all we know.

point is, they arent making a movie about the transformers we all know and loved. they are making a sci-fi action flick and using the transformers name to bring in the crowds.

anyhow, sign the petition guys (i know its just for kicks).

i cant believe they dont have the constructicons. they were the first gestalt type and a big part of the orginal episodes.

the only one half decent thing michael gay has done was hire the original voice actor for optimus and included ACTUAL autobots. *gasp*

Its gross, but when I first saw the Megatron, I genuinely thought: Did he have a bm and take a look at the toilet before he flushed? It looks way too thrown together and like something a 6 year old would come up with.
Optimus isn't terrible looking. The flames seem a little stupid, but atleast the spirit of it is still there. Bumblebee a Camaro? Even if VW didn't give the licensing aggreement, they could have gone with something else that was atleast a little closer to what he was originally.
OT: Beast Wars is actually still my favorite series of all of them. Had great writing and a rather solid storyline. Don't get me wrong, I love the originals, but they were rather formulaic for quite a while. But what cartoon wasn't in the 80's?

XD.. Yeah I must say Beastwars and Beast Machines evolved transformers in dramatic ways, focusing on smaller casts, but a more cohesive and solidly written story.
