Please Help...

Well, I'm new here, and I really need help with 3DS rendering. I'm confident that this is a common problem and I ask that you forgive me if it has been brought up ten quadrillion times, but I'm apparently incapable of doing this.

Well, number one is tranparency on some parts of the hair. They come in filled blocks. and look terrible. This also makes it look like the hair is glued to the forehead. I've heard it has something to do with alpha mapping, but I am completely uninformed on any bit of information as to what alpha mapping is and how to fix this. Also, I find that some layers dominate others and emerge through the higher layes. (I don't know what to call each individual piece of armour, so I'm caling them layers.) For instance, the knees of boots stick out of pants, etc.,.
I've been searching for a tutorial for a while now, if someone can educate me on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
