So us PS2er's can't do this, eh? Damn, if there is a way, please tell ^-^

Ps players can do it but it requires a PC and you need to have ffxi installed and updated or have someone send you the .dats

Then you install the hdd as slave to PC and drag and drop onto a desktop folder or something. Make your edits and back ups then replace the ps2 files correctly then you are all set.

OMG OMG OMG, can you please, please, please, post the exact steps, it'll come in handy for ALOT of people, I ALWAYS wanted to do this...I have PS2 version, HDD, and the disks, what do I do?? Please respond

Ok heres the problem im having... I tried editing my face, just goofing around, making the face look all Sephiroth evil like haha. but for some reason i have this black stuff below my hair, really annoying. I tried erasing the background in Photoshop, but that just makes it white instead of black.. Anyone have a fix for this?

when you altered the hair did you just use the color slider in the images adjustments section? If so thats what will happen all colors will essentially go to their opposite color. IE black to white and vice versa?

Pretty easy actually.

1) take out PS2 HHD
2) turn the hdd into a slave drive
3)install into your PC
4) Check to make sure all data is there.
5) create back up .dats on a folder on your desktop or some other easy to find place on your PC
6) Run the modelviewer( this requires you to have NAFFXI installed) Or optionally you can change the filepath to your ps2 slave drive.
7) Find the .dats you want to alter
8) Use changetex to bring out the .dds file
9) run photoshop or something equivalent
10) make your edits
11) MAKE SURE you have backups
11-A) Use changetex again to return them to.dat format
12)Install your .dats
13) Run modelviewer again to make sure everything is okay.
14)turn off PC
15) uninstall PS2 hdd
16) Reinstall into PS2
Boot ffxi and enjoy.


Disclaimer: Those steps above are what i've done. Your individual experience with .dat altering and PC Tech in general may affect your outcome.

I used the color overlay in Photoshop CS v8.0

Heres the image of the .dat.



As u can see, theres a black area right underneath the hair... now... this ones unedited, so thats the way FFXI must read it, but after i touch it, this happens, with the black under my hair... I just dont know how to fix it...

Help me out .DAT masta!

OMG, thanks SOOO much Tazirai, but what do you mean by slave drive, where would I hook my HDD into? By the way, at the end, when you say "reinstalled into PS2", will that affect anything on my PS2? Like I won't have to reinstalled FFXI and shit, right? Thanks, just need that slave drive question answer especially, thanks

i recomind extracting the BMP with POLutils because it manages to keep the alpha channel information, also, edit ur file with photoshop and the dds tool, the head has a trick to it, i had the same prob and solved it this way

Ah i see where you actually use overlays, I dont.

My method for editing .dats is quite simple really. Faces and hair in particular.

When I edit hair I use the painstacking method of highlighting and turning it grey they coloring to taste. Im a perfectionist so I like to "add" things to my toons, like Earings and tattoos and what not. So i Simply add the colors in by hand then go from there. That way I know Im getting the look I want, not just a palette swap. I do the same thing when I do Photomanips, Its the same method.

Basically the slave your secondary drive thats all.
By reinstall , I mean physically placing the PS2 HDD back into the ps2.^^

solution for the hair problem:

1 Download POLutils Model Viewer and Graphics Converter.
2 Find the head file with the Model Viewer, search for it in the POLutils app.
3 Use POLutils to extrat the BMP file of the hume's head.
4 Replace the BMP file created by the Model Viewer with the one acquired from POLutils.
5 Edit this BMP as you see fit, i suggest using Photoshop or Paint shop pro, some other applications cant save as 32bit BMP, allways save it as a 32bit BMP, dont worry with complete color overlays, the POLutils keeps alpha channel information on the BMP file, i didnt even know this was possible.
6 From there, proceed normally with the graphics converter et all.

Oh I think I see where you are runing into the problems You're editing the BMP and not the .dds itself.

not you balfree, but serantos. I use changetex to turn the .dat inot a .dds file. then I edit the .dds not the .bmp
then use changetex to assign the .dds to a .dat

Changetex then does all the work.

I mean, when you look at them...like if I made the RDM AF1 look like AF2, anyone else I saw with RDM AF1 would look like they had RDM AF2, right?
