Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

This may have already been brought to light, but I was leveling DNC this morning and soloing at 26 in Qufim. A crab buffed itself and basically I was doing 0-2 damage per hit, so I wondered if Quickstep would remove the defense buff and used it on the crab and wah-lah, I was doing normal damage again.

So, I guess it probably goes without saying that maybe the other steps do this? I wonder what else the Steps will overwrite as far as a buff.

Re: Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

No.

DNC's steps lower a mob's evasion and defense, it doesn't remove evasion or defense buffs. Given enough time and steps, you could overwrite a portion of a defense or evasion buff, but that's about it. RDM, BRD or COR would be needed at higher levels to entirely remove a buff.

This doesn't mean DNC's steps are without merit, because they're still very useful to a PT and even more effective when WARs use Shield Break, WHMs and RDMs use Dia and RNGs use Acid bolts to similar effect. All of these effects will stack, too. These jobs working together can reduce a mob's defenses severely.

That's the weird thing, I promise you that when I used Quickstep, the crab's defense buff went away. I did that for about an hour this morning. I'll test it again this evening, but I'm positive..... I know I wasn't drinking this morning.

Not drinking, just eyeballing.

Re: Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

Chances are Steps work like every other type of direct Def down and replace most bonuses. It's how War's Break WS work and how Acid Bolts work iirc.

Chances are they don't since they're completely different and should stack with Def Down.

Steps have their own status icon - go play with a gnat to find that our. They're DNCs, apparently.

Acid Bolts are defense down status, overwritten only by Angon which has a stronger effect. WAR could use armor break to overwrite, but the party is better served by Shield Break since you can't get that kind of Accuracy down anywhere else.

Dia has Def. Down effect, but has its own icon as well.

Re: Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

Well then what would be the best way to test this?

/Check. But again, I don't see why you would want to test it, since Sluggish Daze is its own status and has absolutely nothing to do with Defense Down.

Re: Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

Why not wait until the mob uses it's defense up move, land a step, then have someone dispel it. If the message states that the mob's defense buff goes away, then the step doesn't remove the defense buff. If the dispel has no effect, then steps DO remove mob defense buffs.

Re: Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

Your wrong when you say that Quickstep lowers both Eva and Def, Quickstep only lowers the mobs Eva I dont have the steps in front of me but the next step you learn lowers the Def and the 3rd lowers there Magic Def. So get it straight people.

75 DNC here also.

Re: Steps remove enemy Defense buffs?

I shouldn't have to ask this, but was the 'defense buff' called 'metallic body'...?

Quick step - eva down
Box step - def down
Stutter step - magic something down (can't remember the specifics)

Magic resistance down. {Yes, please.}

It actually troubles me that you're a 75 Dancer and don't know that. It really gives me the impression that you look at it as "oh, it's just some magic something-or-other that I don't care about."

You say that like it's his fault.

I think 9 times out of 10, if a party member notices you're using Stutter Step instead of one of the "good ones", they're gonna think you suck.

Also, Magic Resist, Magic Evasion... whatever. I'm a melee, and I just know it makes you magic-ify better.
