You can raise your fishing from 0 to 90+ level without ever stepping out of the protection of the city limits/safe zone. To me that seems to suggest that SE is intentionally making fishing independent of job levels, so newbies and high levels alike can level a craft.
This is the point I am debating - it is obvious they did not really intend for this to be the case, or why would it even be possible to fish up ADDITIONAL monsters while fishing in the wilds?

And that makes perfect sense. What does crafting has anything to do with a job level? A complete wimp who never threw a punch in his whole life is just capable of learning... say fishing or goldsmithing... as a pro-wrestler. I think SE designed the game to be that way on purpose, so I doubt they'll deviate from their game design.
...the other crafts don't allow you to pull up a level 67 Stygian Pugil that will wipe the floors with you if you fail, either. Again, if Square-Enix wanted Fishing to be level-independent, there would be no monster code involved with fishing. Quod est demonstratum.

I think we can debate this until our face turn blue and not mean anything.

My reasoning is: there is a safe zone for fishing because SE wants to make the craft non- level dependent as all the other crafts are. So why any exception to their own rules.

As you ask why you can pull up monsters, I can counter with the question, why there are safe zones immune of monsters.

So those 2 questions cancles each other out. Which leaves us the fact....

SE made it perfectly possible to level 0 fishing to 90+ fishing without leaving the safe zone. So the bottom line appears to be: SE has designed the game so crafting has to be at least none level >DEPENDENT<. Key word here is dependent.

Level help, nobody doubts that. Higher level = more money sources, safer fishing, yes it helps. But no craft has to >depend< on job level to be doable.

Hmm, I am currently level 37 in fishing, even though I can see why people want the bots removed (because they feel cheated out of their effort), I don't think I want the high level fishes removed from the close zones. I don't care if I fish up monsters, but I do care when I have to travel a long distance to fish

Right now if I don't have a lot of time to play I can just quickly hop to Windy and fish gold carps for skill ups, and then later on I can just join the rest of the fishing-dom right outside Port Windy. I enjoy having that luxury of being able to do so quickly. I think a lot of legitimate fisher do that also. Skill up is random, you might get a skill up on first cast. No one knows so it's still worth it to just fish a short time. I believe I speak for a lot of people that I am willing to deal with botters and have easy fishing access. I can also make some money, while getting some skill ups. I don't think I want to give that up.

For the anti-bot people, I empathize your feelings, but if you get too heated on this issue, I think you are looking at things at the wrong perspective. You are basing your own achievements by comparing to others. The botters getting a Lu Shang or level 90 fishing doesn't diminish your achievement of getting it the hard way. You should feel proud that you have done it so. The botters shouldn't bother you one bit.

If SE really wants it, there are other ways to deal with fish bottings that they can do, without affect existing legitamite fishers. Things such as randomizing the fishing response text is easy to do (just have several versions of them with color variation and it will throw all the pixel reading and bitmap matching bots out of the window). The fished-out timer is poor implementation on SE's side.

Smile the simplest way

to counter bots is a method recommended by someone in an old thread:

make fishing more fun and interactive than just /fish-wait-enter

Really, make a minigame out of it. As it currently stands, fishing is just a test on how long a human being can stare at the screen without falling asleep, going mad, or going blind.

whatever mini-game, etc that SE makes, unless it includes some COMPLETE random aspect (like a screen to press a random button that appears in a random place on your screen), a bot will be able to be made. Even in the random cases, you can make a bot... but itll be too slow to do any good.

I would love to fish 18 hours a day, but i have a real life job. So is it fair that the person who does not have real life responsiblities ,is the only one with the chance to make millions fishing. If you can't beat the botters, join them, report them, or just STFU.

Obviously those who devote more time and effort than you are going to be more successful. I also wish I had a lot more time to play FFXI than I do, but that doesn't mean that I feel I should have all the same things that they have for less effort.
