Leather Craft post 4 Skill Ups!

I have been farming Sheep for Sheepskins amongst other things ans have been making Sheep Wool which sells for a pure profit of 7K a stack. I have made over 50K this way which I used to buy new armour-etc. However after this I have capped my Leather Craft at level 4 (Gasp)! Since LC has been my only profitable synthesis guild (Goldsmithing at level 3) I have decided to take it further.
Is there anything a 32WAR/NIN can easily solo (like sheep) for drops which I can synthesise for a good 7K+ profit whilst using that Synthesis to raise my LC skill level? I.e A drop which synthesises and sells for a decent profit which also raises my LeatherCraft level.
Thanks for the help.

You can kill Rabbits for Rabbit Hides. Make them into mantles and just sell them off to the NPC. You might want to kill some Yagudos for their beads to turn into grass threads as well. It's not as profitable as Sheep Wool but it'll make you money and take you to skill level 8. Or you can take a small loss just to raise your skill up to the Dhalmel Leather stage which makes profit similar to Sheep Wool (might be a little better or worse depending on the server).

I thought making Grass Thread out of Yagudo Necklaces counted towards Cloth Craft points, not Leather Craft? What level is Dhalmel Leather and how could I reach it quickly?

you'll need some cloth skill for your leathecraft, I plan on getting cloth around 20 or so and taking leather higher, Dhalmel Leather I think is 10-13, there is a excellent leathercraft topic, I think on 2nd or 3rd page in this crafting forum

Yes, it will raise your cloth a bit. But it's not exactly a bad thing since you'll need to raise Clothcraft to 60 in the future to make some of the better gear anyway.

Oh, so making Grass Thread will increase both Leather Crafting Skill and Cloth Crafting Skill simultaneously?

I only check here once a day at most so be patient >.<

No, making grass cloth or thread won't raise both at once. But you WILL be using a LOT of clothcraft stuff during your Leatherworking career. Also some of the gear later on (Brigandine Armor, Black Cotehardie, etc) NEED clothcrafting at or near 60 as support in order for you to even be able to make it.

Right, thank you. So what if I wanted to just raise LC and not CC? What could I synthesise which is above the 4 cap?

Then buy the required materials. Most of the recipes (if not all), that are good for skillgains, won't require you to have any support classes (until level 90+). After that, you can buy your materials from the AH if you don't want to use clothcraft to raise it.

Thanks Dragon, appreciate it. But I like to skill up by farming and synthesising while I am there so i can maximise profits, if I bought my current materials from the AH,
Sheepskin= 300 each
stack= 3,600
Wind Crystals= 1,600
Total= 5,200
7K per stack of Sheepwool= 1.8K profit.
From farming.
Wind Crystals= 1,600
Sheepskin= Free
+ 4 or 9 K extra from other materials gained while farming=
between 5.5K-9.5K-14.5K profits.
So anyone know what LC Skill can take me beyond 4 and is farmable and prfoitable like Sheepskin?
A list perhaps?
Thanks again,
Ariesknight

My Mood:
What I am hearing is that you want some way to always gain skill while farming for materials.

Leathercraft is interesting in that almost all of its base materials (hides) can only be farmed, not purchased (compare vs. Cooking, for instance, which is 90% vendor items). However, there are certain points in leathercraft where you simply can not farm the materials required for a skill-up formula - in fact, you must use leather materials that you should have accumulated in previous levels to turn out finished products for skill. Leathercraft isn't unique in this respect - most of the other crafts have similar characteristics, but leathercraft exhibits it most strongly, IMHO.

Unfortunately in this case, you're either stuck farming for more sheepskins to make leather to gain skill with, or stuck farming for rabbit hides (a long, tedious, and equally unprofitable activity). That is often the price you pay for gaining crafting skill - sacrifice profits, or even take a loss on the short term in order to gain skill in hopes of better income and returns in the long term.

EDIT: I should also note that farming for materials is not "free". Yes, it is true that you don't pay any gil for the items, but that does not make them "free". If you spend 3 hours hunting for 5 stacks of rabbit hides worth 600 gil per stack, you've made a whopping 1000 gil per hour. If you have something else that you could do to make 5K per hour, such as mining, you could just as easily have spent 3 hours doing that, made 15K, spent 3K on the same amount of materials, and still be up 12K.

If you want to gain skill, you'll HAVE to take losses. Otherwise, you might as well just stay at skill 4 and keep making sheep wool to sell.

I am ignorant. You are correct Dragonhope. So I probably wanna boost my skill quickly to a level where I can make something for profits like Sheep Wool through some power crafting. Anyone know what I can craft to make my LC go from 4-->10 or so, preferably making a profit, albeit small, just so I break even!
