I'm planning on getting ffxi soon and i was wondering about the whole craft skills thing. If i want to become a blacksmith or a goldsmith...then should i mine for the ore? Do you then make the ore into metal? I'm kinda confused about all this. Could anyone clear it up?

You can mine for different ores and metals. Mines can be found in bastok. It's cheapest to mine but if you can't then buy from your guild leader or the AH. Just start off doing cheap things until your skill raises and keep at it. The more successful crafts the higher your skills go. Try and sell anything valuable you mine or craft in the AH (Auction House). Just check the history to see how mych it's worth. Any more questions? You'll probably understand it better when you get the game and start.

at first you shouldn't mine, it takes too much time and too many pick axes, you can buy copper ore for 9gil~ at the metalworks after joining the guild. Mine when you get a higher lvl

Mining can still be pretty usefull because you can get some valuable ores, depending on what the going rates are at the AH. In the Zeruhn mines in Bastok on my server, I find Tin, Copper, Iron and Darksteel ores. At the Auction house, Iron ores go for 600, Zinc ore for 200-300, and Darksteel ore for 7000! DS ore is very rare (obviously), but I've been able to find 2 while mining. You can use the Tin and copper ores you find to level up your Blacksmithing skills by synthesizing Bronze Ingots, Bronze Sheets and eventually Bronze scales. It's just that all the money you make by selling Iron ores, Zinc ores and the rare DS ores will probably go into buying more copper ores, tin ores, Pickaxes and Fire/Wind crystals (aside from the ones you find). That's why at first, you chouldn't expect to make money out've learning your craft. Heck, you shouldn't be suprised if you lost money. It's in the long run, when you can make items of value, that you can really make money out of it. Crafting in general is an incredibly good exercice in delaying gratification, lol, but the end result is excellent! JR. |

Stupid question: How can you actually find out where in the mines you can mine, which wall you can highlight and use your pickaxe at? Are these areas looking any different? I haven't been able to find such a place yet. Thanks! Rockpusher |

There isn't a visual cue, however when changing targets like you would to target monsters (Tab or Numpad 0), you will find "Mining Points" in various places. After doing it for a while, you'll notice that there's a finite number of places they'll pop up. |
