Harvesting
I have heard about harvesting and would like to know where I can do it and how much of a profit I can earn. If it is a good way to earn gil then are the fields always full and you never get a chance or what?

i found this on another forum by a poster named morgrist (thanks morgrist)

First off, kindly do any reprintaruing, mention me! Rarity comes from the "Final Fantasy XI Online Official Strategy Guide Fall 2003 Version".

Now, if you're a weaver, you'd like some grass to start weaving. Or cotton. Maybe linen? Maybe even silk! All of these can be found in West Sarutabaruta.

Alchemy lovers will seek out Windhurst Tea Leaves and Wijnruits. Tanners need those Tea Leaves too!

Well, if you have a good cutter in hand, you can find them all. The West Sarutabaruta grass covers a bounty.

You'll begin in the Outpost, looking for Yagudo near the entry to Giddeus. The grass between the Outpost and Giddeus can hide all kinds of harvesting points-keep trying to target them. They'll show up as "Harvesting Point" in green on your screen. I have a macro for harvesting- simply /item "Sickle" <t> . Walk up and chop away. You'll get one of the following options, from worst to best:

1) Sickle breaks! Hope you brought a few, I go through a few each trip. Four works fine for me as an amateur.
2) Sickle breaks, but you get something: you lose a sickle, but you got a harvest item doing it. Small comfort.
3) You get nothing. Just keep hacking, it'll cough up something in time.
4) You managed to get yourself something! Moko Grass and Saruta Cotton are the common ones. 4 Saruta Cotton will let you do the "fake moustache quest" for the Star Onion Brigade. Moko grass (2) + Lightning = Grass Thread. Saruta Cotton (2) + Lightning = Cotton Thread for those that want to practice in the field.
5) You got something valuable! Gysahl Greens (chocobo food), Wijnruit, Windhurstian Tea Leaves (Tanners love you), Flax Flowers (Linen) and best of all, a piece of Crawler Cocoon (for silk thread!).

The path to Giddeus is the one most searched- but the better spots are a bit out of the way. From the outpost, go a bit westwards, then look to your left. You should see a ramp going up the side of the cliff. This section is one few people notice (there's a lot of them scattered around West and East Sarutabaruta)- there's two of them, both rich with harvesting points. Yagudo have a camp up the ramp, but you can squeeze past them into the grasses beyond. Aside from the odd Yagudo, this is wide open and safe to harvest in. I've counted at least five different spots to harvest up there, and there's also a stone monument to read. Did you know Tarutaru were once far more ambitious than they are today?

The second rich harvesting area is found up another ramp. As you go west from the Outpost, drift north a bit and hug the wall, following it around the area. You'll see a second ramp. Climb up there- it's Yagudo-free and the grass nearest Giddeus is where plants can be chopped free.

For a new adventurer to Windhurst, this is the safest way to get your weaving supplies in the wild- the cocoon pieces sell nicely at auction,as they're far past a new weaver's skill to make anything of them. Sell the tea leaves and Wijnruit. Save cotton and weave with the grass for practice...and then use the cotton for more weaving practice. Stow the flax for later.

Giddeus is far more dangerous. Keep a few scythes around though- if you get a moment to trim, flax is easier to find in there, though otherwise the odds are the same.

Lightning Crystals are best found near Windhurst from Goblin Fishers, for those who want to dig up their own. Look for the shore tower in the south west of West Sarutabaruta to do best.

tonight im going to go look for these spots and start harvesting myself.

When digging for crystals do you mean with a chocobo or with the ability scavenge?
