I am still interest in cor/thf as DD over /rng or /nin overall. (reason ...simple...cheaper)
I would like to know if anyone actually try that or even measure the differences. Personally, i am playing this as 1st main job because i lost an account of a 75 brd and 65 whm with most of the classes filled beyond dune @ least. (while blm/smn are above 40)
So i have no particular interest in re-playing those class as main, so don't tell me corsair isn't for me.
But however, i am interest at saving money even at the expense to reduce DD dmg overall (but still shoot enough to gain skill or WS with gun). As i look, marksmanship is quite low for Cor compare to RNG and not to mention only slugshot is the best WS.
I am not too high in corsair right now but i am at the point decide to choose a good sub to go with to the top. Since /nin is quite impossible for me (not enough fame for norg) and /rng only add sharpshot and 2 acc bonus. (maybe barriage at higher level)
I was thinking how about /thf ? At level 60, cor/thf have SATA which will do more dmg, and i am assuming it get TPs as well. Since Phantom roll unlike Brd's song is almost instant (never tested but double-up should be only effect the one with the buff even if you move 40 yards away from target?) , doing the buff would only reduce 1-2 hit tops. So there absolutely no need to stay ranged. (of course if you don't know how to play with target unlock, i can't say anything for you).
While /thf also helps the give aggro (assuming SATA wipe all aggro) allowing slugshot to shoot with absolutely no aggro (or tiny bit)
From what i see the negative is that
1. Daggers are hard to find. (and also need a very slow but powerful dagger)
2. Thf sub make SA lose dex boost and TA make it lose agi boost in dmg (but still be a critical dmg which give more TP?)
3. People love Burning parties now, no more regular style.
Of course, i never played thf really in before and i played it for th for farming (and it was long time) so i don't know much about theif basically. Enlighten me please. -add later- Last edited by wrongfeifong : 06-03-2007 at 01:17 AM. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-03-2007, 01:33 AM | #2 (permalink) | | FFXIWiki Team Join Date: May 2006 Location: Windurst Posts: 4,283 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 141 Thanked 1,127x in 630 Posts Gil: 18,581 Bank: 7 Total Gil: 18,587 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. Consider yourself lucky this isn't Allakazham or KI, they'd have a field day with this. This combo cannot work as you see it.
SA / TA only affect melee hits for starters, the bonuses they get from being Thf main (Dex/Agi into damage) - are Thf main only.
Daggers are really hard to produce DoT with. You need to really invest in gear to put out decent damage - which will rarely come close to a War or Monk.
If you play with ranged weapons in melee range, you're going to lose acc/damage.
If you're an RMT though - go for it. If you're not.. suck up the hurt and do Nin/Whm/Rng as subs.
Peace. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-03-2007, 07:25 AM | #4 (permalink) | | Junior Member Administrator Join Date: Dec 2003 Posts: 4,881 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 223 Thanked 660x in 337 Posts Gil: 11,509 Bank: 57,896 Total Gil: 69,404 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. It might take a couple evenings of farming, but it's not going to be any harder than farming the items for your Aht Urghan boat pass and doing the cor flag quest.
+22 accuracy and Sharpshot are pretty good considering how inaccurate Slugshot can be for rangers when they first get it, and they have 42 more accuracy than you at level 60. | Quote: | At level 60, cor/thf have SATA which will do more dmg, and i am assuming it get TPs as well.

While /thf also helps the give aggro (assuming SATA wipe all aggro) allowing slugshot to shoot with absolutely no aggro (or tiny bit) | SATA doesn't increase TP. You get the same amount of TP as you would for a normal hit. Neither Sneak Attack nor Trick Attack work on ranged attacks or ranged WS, so you would still take full aggro from a SATA Slugshot.
Basically, thf sub does nothing for you but give you one free critical hit with a dagger every 60 seconds. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-03-2007, 07:47 AM | #5 (permalink) | | anti-spam Super Moderator Join Date: Jan 2004 Posts: 5,534 Style: Dark - Version 5 My Mood: Thanks: 21 Thanked 64x in 59 Posts Gil: 37,841 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 37,841 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. if you are worried about gil, don't play COR. it is not cheap and /thf won't make it any cheaper (not to mention it'll suck for all the reasons others have posted above). | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-03-2007, 10:14 AM | #6 (permalink) | | Heir to Odin Oracle of Knowledge Join Date: May 2006 Location: None of your damn business Posts: 3,392 Style: Light - Version 5 My Mood: Thanks: 690 Thanked 311x in 211 Posts Gil: 85,695 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 85,695 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. People exaggerate the expense of these jobs so horribly. COR and RNG (NIN, too) are really only a conflict if you level many other jobs outside of them.
Solution?
Stop levelling so many damn jobs.
COR's best gear is BC/KSNM, Assault, Salvage, or is Rare/EX. Just about every last slot is filled with Rare/Ex at this point. So its really only the ammo you worry about in the long term.
Noct Armor lasts a COR from 30 to 55 . Most of our guns are cheap. You'll only ever need two kinds of knives your entire career, swords before 30 and after 70 as the situation demands with /RNG
All of our Rolls and Cards are bought from NPCs.
And I paid for most of my ammo by just burning my conquest points and imperial standing on saleable items. I never slowed down on RNG or COR for too long.
Its expensive, but its not THAT expensive. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-03-2007, 11:26 AM | #8 (permalink) | | Sticky Paws Keeper of Knowledge Join Date: May 2006 Location: Southern California Posts: 2,892 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 237 Thanked 609x in 395 Posts Gil: 5,938 Bank: 119,181 Total Gil: 125,119 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. COR/THF will cost you more Gil.
Your range accuracy will be LOWER than /RNG (or /NIN with R.Acc daggers x2), so you have to shoot MORE often to keep skill capped on COR. XD (Seriously, though, you'd get better damage/gil if you go /RNG.)
Lower level arrows and range weapons are not that expensive, so leveling RNG to 37 shouldn't be that horrible. You'll need the range accuracy gear for leveling COR, too, so that's no additional expense.
Dagger DoT really isn't that impressive, as others have mentioned, SA and TA don't work with range weapons, and you don't get damage bonus from SA/TA from /THF as a THF main would (it's just straight up crit hit from SA), IIRC.
COR/THF only if you're desperate to get more crystals and random drops--and if the party has a good sense of humor. Otherwise, /RNG (the standard), /NIN (puller), or /WHM (party needs a little more curing power), please. “ I’m in pain, but I’m happy.”
“ It hurts, but I can smile.”

COR/THF does little to no good to party, being poor isn't an excuse that can get you out of trouble for playing poorly, you are dealing with strangers over the internet, no one gonna babysit your way to 75 -at least I won't-, how would you feel when your WHM turn up naked with only Cure, because for the same reason, he doesn't want to spend money? You gonna say, "ah, he can stay, he is poor, but he needs level, I am gonna have the party work on getting good exp with only 5 members."? And then your tank turned up naked with a BST sub because he is freaked out about taking damage, and to proof his determination he wears nothing?
Sarcasm aside, if you can't afford the job, don't play it, no one is here to babysit you over the internet, if you expect others to play their best in your party, you should do the same.
Norg fame is easy as hell to get, took my friend 1 month or so to get utsusemi quest, and she doesn't even play much, nor has she done the purple belt.
I am not gonna go over how little COR/THF will offer for the COR and the party, as everyone has mentioned it over and over already. COR/NIN on the other hand, apart from paying for 1 more weapon, isn't as expensive as you think it is; Japanese even suggested using dual sword(with melee stat) to be a sword COR, though I have never seen it in action...
COR/RNG all the way for me however. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-04-2007, 04:11 PM | #10 (permalink) | | FFXIWiki Team Join Date: May 2006 Location: Windurst Posts: 4,283 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 141 Thanked 1,127x in 630 Posts Gil: 18,581 Bank: 7 Total Gil: 18,587 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. Four swords a COR should only ever touch:
Jr. Musketeer.
Phantom Flueret (dream on)
Joyeuse
Martial Analace
Corsair's Scimitar as an option 5th.
COR/NIN is primarily a manaburn combo for me, sometimes TP burn but less common there. If I /NIN, there usually isn't much melee at all. COR/RNG is what I use overall. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-04-2007, 05:43 PM | #11 (permalink) | | Member Join Date: Nov 2003 Posts: 783 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post Gil: 1,134 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,134 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. Here is a Japanese COR site, I have no idea if you hate JP or if you don't mind them, that does not matter to me, we are on different servers(hopefully). And, in the subjob section, click on the tab that reads "Ninja", and in it, 1 of the possibilities of COR/NIN is to use 2x melee swords to melee! Oh, and they didn't say it is recommended, nor is it a good idea, just stating all the possibilities.
As for "wha" and "why", I will have to say I have no idea at all, for all I know, COR has B- in sword, B in gun, and I really don't see much pain in trying it: melee for TP , slug shot for WS. But well, when I am richer, I will give it a try, and I might be able to answer the "why". Ah, don't worry, I won't be using it in EXP Party or in any way that it would harm a bunch of people that don't know me, and if anyone really care about what I do when I am with my friends... they have issues.
I never really supported the idea of COR/NIN, to be honest, I don't think the OP should even be playing COR when he can't afford the cost, COR has highest cost for ammo and crap compared with other jobs -that is if you craft the most that you can for your jobs-, and he clearly didn't prepare himself for the cost, no one is gonna be looking forward to babysit a COR that doesn't want to do his best. I merely transcribed another possibility that he could look into if he is really determined to use minimal ammo, as a COR(as weird as that sound). | Originally Posted by Cali | | COR/RNG all the way for me however. | | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 06-04-2007, 07:34 PM | #12 (permalink) | | FFXIWiki Team Join Date: May 2006 Location: Windurst Posts: 4,283 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 141 Thanked 1,127x in 630 Posts Gil: 18,581 Bank: 7 Total Gil: 18,587 Donate | Re: Looking for Cor/thf for answers. Joyeuse is extremely good for COR, but DW is actually a hindrence to is attack rate. I usually use Joyeuse in EXP and merit.
That aside, the only other sword really worth having is Martial Analace.
I really just hate how people are attracted to this class, but try to dance around the money issue and play it on the cheap. NIN suffers from the same problem but RNG doesn't. Sure we all have probably seen the RNG using scorpion arrows, but when you have a /WAR sub and E/V-Bow, its kinda hard for others to pick up on that fact, they just see the big damage Sidewinders.
COR just doesn't get that kind of leeway, though.
And RNG costs way more than COR, there's no comparison to make. I peel off ammo at a slower rate due to the varying styles in which I play COR at 75. In manaburn and TP burn, I generally go /NIN and set up fights like a BRD would, but more commonly in manaburn. The luxury of a Joyeuse does also allow me to hold back my firing rate on /RNG, but only so much, I still use a moderate amount ammo, I just get a lot of free TP for weaponskills now.
RNG just burns ammo, there are no buffs to stagger what I do on RNG. In a prolonged fight, I'll burn more ammo on RNG, so it ends up being more expensive even if the ammo is sometimes cheaper. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -8.
