The same way you'd do it with an iPod. It's all treated like just another hard drive, as far as the system is concerned.

And to answer my own question above, since you had to ask this question, you're definitely not in a good position to muck around with registry settings, so again I'll repeat the suggestion of installing directly to the removable "drive".

I was just wondering if there was an easier way the other person knew of. I've done my fair share of "mucking around", if it's not too much of a hassle, could you teach me how to do it?

No. There is no easier way then installing it properly.

No.

If you want to screw things up, learn how the registry works and screw it up yourself.

Moving the files can have unexpected, possibly disastrous, results.

I just checked my registry entries and there's three separate entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/PlayOnlineUS/InstallFolder. In theory you could move the files and modify these three entries to match the new location, but I really don't recommend trying it. If you (or more specifically your friend) has no idea what any of the above means, then definitely don't try anything funny; just install to the iPod's storage.

Having multiple installations on different hard drives (or partitions) will only work off of another instance of the OS. This is a change which SE made which affected players who used to be able to have a JP client and EN client on the same drive/partition and could run it on the same instance of the OS.

The above will only work if you have multiple installations of Windows, whereby you boot off the particular drive/partition designated (i.e., Drive C will have Windows XP EN client, Drive D will have Windows XP JP client, and at boot up, you would select the instance of Windows to load depending on which client you want to play on)

In order to do this off of someone's computer, they need to have multiple installations of Windows and you should then label the different instances by whoever will use it (i.e., Drive C will be Jerry's FFXI and Drive D will be Tom's FFXI, etc)

...what the hell are you talking about?

I'm going to have to call BS on this simply because I have EN and JP installs in separate folders under a single OS. They use different registry keys. There are even guides for coping with moving the FFXI install around.

Also, this isn't what the user is asking about in the first place. The question is about having multiple systems run the same FFXI install on a removable drive. The steps needed for this have been more or less outlined above, aside from the details on finding the guide I mentioned (I spoke to the OP in PM about this).
