you are compairing the p3 to an itanium processor here (just if it was a server). p4 is 32 bit, athalon 64 is 64 bit. in games that can't adjust to 64bit processing, the p4 with ht OFF would kill it. in anything that can support 64bit, the athalon own bury the p4.

im waiting to see what the prescot can do, then intel may have something to kill athalon processor, for now..

mr doppel

you do realize that HT does not decrease preformence? It improves it. Maybe not by much but it can sho0ot numbers up by 5 to 20%. In most cases an unoptomized app will only yield a 5% increase. Apps that are optimized for hyper threading can get a 20% increase.

The logical processors in a Hyper Threading processor share certain processor resources such as the execution engine, the floating point unit, the on-board cache and naturally the system bus.

This has advantages and disadvantages, some of the advantages being a shorter data path between the two logical processors and high-speed communication between the logical processors. The disadvantages are that both logical processors need to compete for use of the shared resources; the execution engine, the floating point unit, the cache, etc. The disadvantages
Should really be called that. Because it does not hurt the preformence of the CPU Just the effectiveness of HT. which will be tuned in the next release. Presscott

You can see in multi-tasking, hyperthreading excels way beyond a single processor.

Not true look at 3dmark2001 the athlon fx 51 kills the p4 with or without HT on.

HT should always be enabled

i wasn't talking about normal apps aerobahn, i was talking about games and game benchmarks. in a lot of games (not including games that take advantage of two games), ht does hinder proformance slightly, even if it is <5%. this is because the game doesn't have a multitasking code, or two processor support.

as for the athalon, the athalon 64 is just under par with the 3.2gh p4. on the other hand, the athalon fx is more powerful than both. there is a large diffence in power/price when compairing the three. the athalon 64 has the highest ratio, followed by the p4 then athalon fx. all this is speculating the app is not a 64bit, or ht supporting app.

the prescott will use the netburst arcitecture of the p4, but nothing has been released regarding ht directly form intel.

if you don't want to read all that, yes, the athalon fx will kill the p4, but the p4 is slightly better than the athalon 64. ht reduces proformance in some games, due to the usage of processor resources.
