I am currently woodworking 21. What is the cheapest way to skill up to 60?

Literacy for the win.
Try to stick with lumbers and arrows as much as possible, they sell well so you won't get stuck with millions of gil in crappy wands noone will ever buy. The only problem with the sticky is that it often tells you to skill on it all the way to the skill cap. Its not terrible pre 60, but it can be painful in the 50's to try and skill when you're only one level away from the cap.

Just go to Ghelsba to logg for wood to help cut down costs. Like someone else said stick with arrows.

GET LUMBERJACK!!! You will need this when you are making lumber for skill ups on the ammo. Do not use lumberjack to skill up on lumber synths. Do not use boltmaker for skill ups on bolts. 1 synth = 1 skill up not 3.

Anything directly related to Ammo is where your money is! IF you need money at some point make a ton of ash lumber and sell it in Jeuno.

Also, level up alchemy a bit for the Bast Parchment.

With the new 99 stack heads & fletchings for ammo I've found it to be a not-so-great choice nowadays, on kujata at least Demon Arrowheads are going for nearly a mil per stack... As far as leveling goes that's just not what I'm looking at paying for the 3 levels that the last stack gave me, and as for making a bit of gil on the side... Shihei plain and simple, if you can make your own bast parchment you can also make black ink. Farm/npc the materials yourself and it's pure profit, Ammo will never sell as well or as high as shihei, simply because almost every melee job out there nowadays subs nin, but only pullers, rng & thf will use ammo. There is also HQ instruments that make quite a nice return when you gather your own materials...

Edit: I use Demon Arrows as an example, but in my experience other heads are quite a large investment gil-wise as well just scaled down in relation to the lower returns

Edit2: ok, so how does this relate to the topic? Simple, Ammo is no longer the cost effective way to go, find an instrument or club/stave/whatever where you can buy cheap logs from the guild shop, synth yourself with lumberjack and sell the item back to the guild or another NPC when you're done... sure you're not going to make bank levelling, but it's less of a loss and certainly less of an initial outlay than ammo

Changing my reply a bit.

Ammo is for certain a substantial investment for higher level skill ups in woodworking. I am at 59 having capped on Scorpion Arrows. My next step is Dark Steel Bolts. Considering the heads are 800K+ a stack on Hades I am stuck for a while.

Looking at the other options at my level there is nothing else worth skilling up on. The cost of Rosewood lumber makes the Angle's Flute more expensive than Dark Steel Bolts to get the number of levels I desire. Being a Ranger at 52 I am going to need the dark steel bolts. Many of the the synths have high level alchemy or Goldsmithing as a sub which is not going to happen for me. I could try Ebony lumber but again cost is a major issue. Waiting on broken tarutaru fishing rods is not time effective.

Shihei is good for making money but that assumes a lvl 29 Alchemy and level 45 woodworking to make the bast parchment. Buying the parchment is expensive to say the least.

One elm log will run you about 10K on hades. that log will only make 2 stacks of shihei. The ink is going to cost you around 30K to make depending on what recipe you use. So you are looking at about 20K per stack to start out. Since Shihei normally sells for around 20K you are breaking even if you can't HQ at least one piece of the puzzle.

For the OP's benefit, I would suggest getting Lumberjack as soon as possible then head into Carpenters landing and Make Arrowwood Lumber and Ash Lumber until your head spins. You should be able to make anywhere from 3-6K profit on arrowwood and 4-8K profit for ash (per Stack). This is with very little investment. It will take some time to make any real money but in one afternoon (4 hours) I made 250K just off of ash alone. 25 stacks at 10K each in Jeuno at the time.

Here is the bottom line. You need to read all the guides. They were written to guide you along. Then you need to look at your available funds, what the prices are like on your server, and figure your best option.

I would also suggest you level alchemy. I did and made money all the way. I never lost gil on alchemy.
