So I finally got BLU and I'm very excited to play as it, but I'm still confused on how to obtain the spells. I know the enemy needs to cast it, but here's an example of why I'm having trouble:

I'm trying to learn Sandspin from Tunnel Worms, but all they ever use is Stone. Are their only certain worms that can use this ability or am I missing something?

Go to google and type in The Blue Mage Hunting Ground or check Wiki. When a monster does a spell there is a "chance" you will learn it. Capping blue magic skill is the only proven way to increase your chances of learning a spell. You just have to keep at it.

Learning blue magic is pure luck for eg i went 1/45 on refueling but then went 1/1 for most of the sea spells. All the worms at your level will do sandspin at some point , make sure your in melee range equip your lowest dmg weapon or remove all together and punch the mob to feed it tp, You can potentially spend a long time on mobs that have a lot of tp moves, worms for eg can cast magic use gastric bomb, tremors full force blow or sandspin, so every ws you have a 1/4 chance of seeing the right spell, soon as it finished the spell kill it. If you learnt the spell it will appear in light yellow writing before the experience/loot section saying Gotenx learns Sandspin!

Learning your first one can be hard as you have no blue magic skill, try to get pollen your first healing magic from the low level bees and you can skill up blue magic wherever you are. Its like most skills self casting spells skill up slower than attaching magic. Get the first few spells eg power attack, sprout smack, wild outs and go to town on the mobs with them, its the fastest skilling magic ive tried just due to the speed you can cast one after the other.

Dont give up on its Blue mage is a great job and it gets really addictive learning all the spells, Just remember you cant learn a spell 10 levels above you current blue magic skill level and the higher the spell is above you level the harder it potentailly is. Good luck to you

Stone is a spell. Sandspin is a TP move. The worms need TP to use Sandspin.

At low levels your best bet is to simply look for a mob, whittle it down to <25% HP, and if its TP move isn't the one you want, just kill it and move on to the next one. Above 25% HP, mobs use TP when they reach a random amount between 100 and 300, but at 25% and lower they always go when they have 100 TP. At high levels it's possible to get a mob below 25% HP and then just give it a lot of TP for very little damage (e.g. using a very weak weapon) to get it to spam its TP move.

^^ welcome to BLU. This is perhaps the single most aggravating aspect of the job, learning magic. All your spells are "free" in a sense, and some will be harder to learn than others (especially the ones from Lumoria and ToAU areas) but it's all part of the job so I hope you don't get discouraged slugging it out!

As others said, you need to feed the mobs TP, and when they get very low in HP they will use it much more often. A good way to go about trying to force a mob to use it's TP is to engage something that's easy prey to you and beat on it with a low level club or sub WHM and spam dia on it.Basically anything that will feed it TP without doing a lot of damage. Once it has used the right attack, go in for the kill and pray ^^

I guess it is all about luck. I'm doing the dia spam, but the seem to die before they use anything.

Another question: You can only set 6 spells, but can learn as many as you want?

Dia spam is likely a waste of time at this level. Just smack things with a paddle (wand) if things are dying too fast.

You can learn every BLU spell in the game. The number of spells you can set at one time is limited by the number of spell setting points and spell slots you currently have. These will go up as you level.

With his limited MP? Yeah probably, but it works like a charm later on which is why I suggested both.


Read the BLU wiki entry for full details, but you gain 5 more blue magic set points every 10 levels after level 1 (11>21>31 etc) as well as additional slots (I forget what the spell cap is to be honest). Also, when setting your spells you can get job traits as well as stat bonuses like VIT +3 from Cocoon, or Beast Killer from equipping two plant spells (Wild Oats & Sprout Smack being the earliest available combination and two spells you should almost never go without anyway.)

As long as you (solo) or your party wins the battle (which the mob dies), you have the chance to learn that spell.

The Vyuru way of learning Blue Magic:

Beat on Mandragora for hours while complaining about the crappy rate that you learn Blue Magic
Go to the Blue Magic Hunting Grounds and discover you learn Head Butt from Quadav
Run to Bastok and learn it on the first mob
Cast repeatedly in an effort to dull the pain

In all seriousness however. I generally preferred to combine exp and spell learning, so I targeted DC mobs as much as I could, EM mobs were fine as long as they weren't difficult to kill or take too long. The reason I liked DC mobs was because they have much more health than EP do. So you tend to see more TP moves per mob, and DCs give good exp too.

Once you hit lvl 30+ I would highly recommend that you go spell learning as Blu/Dnc. Curing yourself with TP really helps keep your MP going further and in general, helps you quite a bit. Ask for some help, high level help can make spell learning much, much easier. I helped a friend farm his spells for his Blu sub, and since I was able to go Blu/Rdm and Dia or Diaga spam, we went through alot more mobs than he could have otherwise and got his spells in pretty rapid order.

Also, keep your blue magic capped for spell learning, it really helps.

Not really worth it 'til you drop the mob's HP to 25% in my opinion though. Before then it's better to just spam Bludgeon and other MP-efficient damage spells to get its HP low ASAP while you feed it TP.
