I'm not sure if it was via beating up a boss, I dont remember that clearly. The "Limiting factor" for each ability was the amount of a certain color of jellybeans you had.

The only thing about Kirby is that he can usually only retain one ability, and he can use his current ability unlimitedly. In Kirby Super Star's sub-game "Milkyway Wishes" he could keep abilities he obtained (though he got them by touching trophies rather than his standard Inhale), but I don't think there's ever been a Kirby game in which he has a limit to how much he can use a power, save for the obviously broken ones like Cook/Mike/Crash that pretty much destroy everything on-screen. Unless you want to consider the fact that powers can be knocked out of him the "limiting factor."

Kirby was also able to combine enemies into a another more powerful ability. Kinda like how bluemage combines spells to get him some new abilities.

The basic concept of "take the other guy's power" is documented on TV Tropes; one could just scour that for the more blue-mage-like versions. (It's a wiki with no account needed, so you can add your own examples too.) Mega Manning - Television Tropes & Idioms |

It's not a game, but Heroes' Sylar is kinda like that. Kills someone and takes their power. A couple other characters as well, minus the killing.

Breath of Fire 3 & 4. You spent your turn watching the enemy and if they used a skill you might learn it. You could then use Skill Ink or Aurum to pass the skill to another character or inscribe it in a book for later use. Chrono Cross: Cast a Trap Element and you could steal an enemy's element for your own use. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia: It wasn't out yet when this thread was made but now that it's shambling around again I may as well mention it. Shanoa can absorb the glyphs enemies sometimes use to cast spells. Quote:
What he was talking about: In SaGa Frontier you have four playable races, one of which is "monster". Monsters can copy an ability from a defeated enemy. Also, depending on the abilities your monster currently has, it may morph into another monster afterward.

My Mood: | Re: Blue Magic in non-FF games You know, after I reread this topic I thought the exact same thing. All three are able to emulate other peoples abilities although all 3 are different from each other. Sylar is now more like Peter since he recently learned a ability without having to kill anyone to do it lol.

Along the same lines, Rogue - who also appears in a few games in which she can copy powers of other characters, such as X-Men Vs. Street Fighter. Wild Arms actually had a blue magic-like mechanic as early as WA2; that game's secret character, Marivel, learned new spells by using a "power steal" spell on different enemies, like Kimahri in FFX. (As that example shows, blue magic has varied somewhat in the FF series; Quistis, Quina and Kimahri all had different ways of learning blue magic than the FFV/VI standard.)
