I haven't found anything on this but I could have overlooking it. Can a mana burn style party excel in Promies?

You simply don't have the firepower at that level to manaburn it. Maybe you can take off a good chunk of life if you manafont > spread out...but it's still unlikely that you'll win. | |

I don't see why it couldn't be done. Anima last 30 seconds each. If 6 people have an intimidation anima, that's 3 minutes that the boss is standing there not attacking. If all 6 people also have a run-around-like-an-idiot anima, that's 6 minutes. I think 6 BLMs spamming nukes could probably take it down in 6 minutes with ease.

Last time I went BLM to a promyvion, I seem to recall being regularly resisted. Even with anima, I doubt it would work. The run around like a chicken with its head cut off doing nothing anima sounds alright at first, except you then have a problem keeping it in range while you cast and having the next person with the anima being in range to actually use it before the boss mows soft little blm under. Also these are real players, so you're going to end up with "I was nuking as fast as I could and didn't notice I needed to use my anima in time." |

They have pretty strong natural resistance to magic so it would be tough. I don't see why you would need to Mana Burn it though, just get any decent, balanced party of 6, grab a full set of Anima, and do it old school like.

Wouldn't know about the resistance though. I always figured magic accuracy was alright if you nuked its weak element. I've never done a Promy on a caster job though. But I do remember the BLMs could pull hate if they wanted to. Worst case scenario: NIN tools?

Yes. Bear in mind the effect only lasts 15 seconds though. You'd have to take turns reapplying it.

Cool, now to find enough LS mates to give it go. Thanks for the replies.

Good luck finding BLM-Only LS mates to burn this with you, you'll more likely find the mercenary variety of BLMs that would want to be paid for this questionable experiment once you're reduced to /shouting for help. Promies don't need to be done with highly specific setups or burn setups, just balanced ones that know what they're doing and the ones that come prepared and have researched the fight. What you're looking at here is hours of frustration, losing and dragging people through a fight they've won ages ago and don't wish to do again. You'll have far better chances finding a balanced setup so long as you recruit and build it yourself in advance. Don't do /shouts in Jeuno or Whitegate, you'll just attract unprepared idiots. Use forums and linkshells to recruit and build a balanced group through them. Only way to really burn promies is to SMN burn them and that's really just cheating yourself of the experience. |

These things have a damn near, if not more, 50% magic resistance to ALL spells, even those of the element they're "weak" too. I did these fights weekly for months on and off ever since CoP came out, often times taking people who were no higher then 30 on a single job, including Blms. These guys are *not* burn friendly, especially in 6 minutes. It could work, I won't say it won't, but there's really no reason to need to burn them and it's certainly not the most efficient method to do it.

Agreed about the shout-pickup-f**ckedup- party to do promies. I tried with LS and only sucessfully completed one,Dem. I set up that party. I let my LS designee setup the other parties and all failed. I always go as BLU/NIN because it was successful in my first run. What does a balances setup for promies look like?

Same thing it looks like in any other situation. Tank DD DD DD Healer Support or any minimal variation of that setup (BLMs count as DDs, and it's recommended to have a secondary healer if the Support job isn't one.) It doesn't take any special knowledge, just knowing the boss's trick (e.g. Dem's baby spawns). Having full sets of anima and using them intelligently almost guarantees the win because they buy you so much leeway.

Tank, Healer, Support, 3DD - The standard balanced party. That support is sort of a wild card, mainly its a job that can back other things up. When I would go RDM, I backed up both the WHM and acted as an extra nuker. You can have a BLM doing that as well and have effectively 4 DD as long as you don't have a brain dead BLM that won't also keep an eye on peoples HP. Promyvions are not rocket science. It does not take much to do them. |

Feel the need to point out that as far as "support" goes, for promies, bringing a BRD or DNC is a waste of time. BRD robs you of a more combat of healer-focused role, DNC needs to spam TP to cure and enfeeble and that's not TP going into weaponskills. Plus gagger weaponskills are pretty weak at that level. CORs are passable for promies since they can buff and shoot from a range, but they're really not effective til 40 caps. If you're going to bring ranged attackers, go for the top and go with RNGs. RNGs are not only good DDs for promies, but helpful in navigating your way to the top floor since they have Wide Scan. BST has this trait as well, though their detection range is a bit more limited. I've made it work as BST, though. Support and healing can pretty much be covered by 2 WHMs or a WHM with BLM backing him on healing. Heck even a second BLM on the backline with a WHM can be handly. Wouldn't bring more than two BLMs, though. Always bring a WHM. |
