I've become accustomed to letting my pets do all the work, while I just chill outside of hate gaining range. I'm level 22 (1.3k from 23), and I've read a few threads saying I'm around the level range where I can safely melee with my pets.
But if I jump into the fray, and build up hate by dishing out damage during the fight, will that mess up my ghetto leave strategy?
This is usually how I end the fight...
1. Wait until mob is down to last sliver of life.
2. Get well outside the range where I would gain any hate from actions like resting, curing, and activating job abilities.
3. Hit my Ghetto Leave macro (heel + stay).
4. Wait for pet to die.
5. Engage mob.
If I melee with my pet, I'm afraid that the sequence of events will change...
3. Hit my Ghetto Leave macro.
3a. Mob hits my pet a few times.
3b. Pets hate has decreased enough so that the mob comes after me.
4. I'm forced to finish the mob with my pet still alive.
I haven't tried it yet, to see if that's how it will turn out. Can anyone advise me on whether or not I should melee with my pet if I still want to be able to Ghetto Leave? Lyonheart

You can try it but the way you descibed how you think it will happen happened to me alot. Usually I would let the pet fight on it's own and only jump in if it was getting it's but kicked then when things even up turn around (make sure your not locked on to pet you shouldn't fight that way with bst anyway imho) till pet gets hate back run out of range heal and rest. Also I used a lower level axe so that I wouldn't do too much damage. Experiment a little and see what your comftorable with. I may be the minority here, but I was never a big fan of Ghetto Leave. The concept was nice, but for some reason I could not consistently time things right.
1.) Either my pet would die too soon for me to "solo" the mob the rest of the way.
2.) My mob would have so much HP that it took forever for the mob to kill off my pet.
I always liked walking the hate line, and finishing off the mob with my pet. For me personally, I felt that i was getting much better exp/hr by killing quicker and getting higher chains (even with the 30% exp cut).
Plus, it's more fun to melee than watch your pet melee.
As for your question, I would be extra careful with the hate line. Definitely Heel/Stay with the mob outside of your radar.
I know your only 22, but at 25, Sic might be helpful for letting your pet build a little bit of emnity towards the end of the fight. Just make sure (like Heel/Stay) you Sic with the mob outside of your radar. BST66

hope your doing well bud.
yea, pre lv. 40, hate is so touchy that anything will make the mob turn to you. even if you havent done anything all fight and you heel/stay, just those /ja alone will make the mob hit you a few times before it turns back to your pet.
just need to tough it out till 35 >< Omni@Remora: NIN75 RNG75 MNK75 COR75 BST63 BRD45

Rather than religiously using Ghetto Leave, I think I'll start mixing it up with times when I let my mob live, and just take the exp cut.
I made lvl 24 last night in Buburimu, and a couple things really stand out to me from the 3 level stretch I've spent there this week.
- As Jugil mentioned, sometimes my pet has way too much HP left. It would be better in these situations to take the exp penalty just to speed up overall exp.
- Mobs that heal themselves tend to throw huge monkey wrenches into the mix. Goblin Leechers had a tendency to cast Cure III on themselves immediately after dispatching my pet. Sometimes, I had to burn 3 or 4 pets on one Leecher, just because it kept healing itself even after I employed Ghetto Leave. Lyonheart
