BST tips for a newby

Hello all i am new to this message board and do not own FFXI yet. But out of all my research on the game i have found that i have the most interest in the BST and was wondering if any of you could give me some tips. Like on what race to use and a good sub job for BST.

I was thinking of going Elvaan or Tarutaru and have a subjob of a RDM that sound ok?
