When starting the game, synthesis is a bit advanced for you right now since you're starting the game. When you are more experienced with the game, you can finally start it. Also, get to know your nation a lot. Look all around the places in your nation.

Mog's comment is rather "sarcastic-like" but he says things like that when things are quite obvious. You really should search for this stuff though and read the book that FFXI provides you with. I didn't want to to read, but when I got bored I was like "Hey, why not read it now?"

Telling people to use the search function saves the time it takes for people to repeatedly state the same common information over and over again.
