Yes it did exist, which is why its called a filler and not "something that didn't happen".

I bet if you ask almost any US kid his first memory of anime, Dragon Ball Z will be his answer.

Nevermind the fact that the original Dragon Ball was just better overall.

Yup. Or Sailor Moon or Pokemon.

Also, I'm a little worrisome how it with handle dubbing in the us ; ; You know funimation.

Same time, I kinda liked the earlier animation styles when it first came out until the end of the cell games. =/

Re: DRAGONBALL Z Returns to Japanese TV in April

Filler is defined as anime content that is not featured in the Manga.

Thus, the bulk of DBZ (everything past Frieza) and DBGT in it's entirety = filler.

EDIT: I honestly don't remember which of these 3 animes I saw first but they were all so close together;

Samurai Pizza Cats, Sailor Moon and Tekkaman Blade (or "Technoman" as it was called Stateside)

My first anime was G-Force/Gatchaman.

I was too young to know any difference back then though. Cartoons were just cartoons and I had no clue where they came from.

Re: DRAGONBALL Z Returns to Japanese TV in April

The first anime I actually liked was Saint Seiya, even with the crappy crappy oh-so-freaking-crappy dubbing*. But I watched Speed Racer and others before that.

Also worth mentioning is Captain Tsubasa, J is still one of my favorite animes to date.

*That's what got me into Japanese, original language and the usual learning-how-to-draw-manga-style phase. And I was pretty good if I could say it myself, I just completely lacked inspiration to create new things. Which led to more than a decade (and counting) without even trying to draw anything at all, well, except for a few really crappy drawings like 5 years ago.

If only they would sell Muses at the art supplies store, that would've helped a lot.

Odd. For me, it's quite the opposite: I am more or less frequently hit by the desire to draw something, but what frustrates me is that I have not even the faintest glimmer of artistic skill or knowledge to put it down with.

I wouldn't even know my way around an art supplies store. >_>;

So was Transformers, and a number of other old shows.

That said, all hail Astro Boy

Exactly.

That's why I said many kids will likely refer to Dragon Ball Z(or yes, Sailor Moon or Pokemon), as their first anime.

In truth, when we look back on it, those weren't the first by a long shot.

For me it was around the time I started watching Speed Racer as a kid but it wasn't actually that. I got into it because my dad was military and had a friend from the military living nearby that had a JP wife. Going into their home was like stepping back in time and going to another country. My god I remember my first sleep over and taking a bath there! Thats what started me, its where I started watching Speed Racer, eating JP food, learning JP words, and seeing the style they live in. Unfortunately there was still a lot of negativity towards the JP's in our area at that time. It was difficult for them in the neighborhood and my father eventually forbid me to go over there. (Ya like that stopped me.) They did eventually end up moving.

Yeah I remember Sailor Moon was my first anime. I still plan to watch all of those seasons of SM someday in the future.
