Just PT'd with one yesterday, felt the need to share. Simply put, amazing Party format was war, drk, thf, blm, brd, rdm. No white mage, levels 43/45 in crawlers fighting flies. Red Mage had refresh. At the end of a battle with a totetote that gave 170 exp (no chain, first battle), I prepared to wait for recharge when I found, much to my surprise, the mages were more or less full on MP, and all of our HP were full. The bard did NOT have ballad 2, so I imagine at higher levels, if it's refresh rdm + bard with ballad II... *brain goes dead from imagining too much*

Anyhow, I'd pick refresh rdm over whm/blm any day now, if I know for sure that they have refresh.

ur pt has a great frontline, thf drk and war, plus blm that can cover offensive and healing magic. Rdm will work well even without refresh.

yes, refresh is amazing, last PT that i had with refresh rdm was like this

drk, pld (me), thf, rdm, whm, brd

the whm was a taru, with around 600 mp, after each fight, the taru wouldn't drop below 450 mp, and the rdm is almost constantly at full mp, since i wasn't part of the renkei, i did alot of healing as well, with refresh casted on me, i pretty much took on the role of a healer. it was cool, coz since pld can't do much dmg to increase hate, cure3 worked really good for that. sometimes i even got so lazy i decided to use cure3 to "taunt" rather than the actual skill since i have like "infinite" mp.

as for replacing whm with rdm tho, that does have a draw back. rdm can't do area spells that whm can do, so protea is a pain. many anti-curse spells r for whm only, so that's a big problem, curses like ?Î?AŽô‚¢ are really annoying. Since rdm don't get haste till 48, it's kinda hard to fight in crawlers w/o a whm at 43.

i think it's better to replace a blm with a rdm but there r draw backs too (like no escape or ancient spells).

but yes, the refresh spell is mad and it's rdm much stronger than they once were. let's just hope that the level cap is gona be 85 or so then brd/rdm at high levels would be insane ^^

Good for you I hope every Paladin out there plays like you described. Makes us mages/bards very safe

As for plds healing in pts:
i was in a pt last night
we got 6k exp in 2hours
which is pretty good

the pld would use up all their mp which was good and all but i doubled healed the same person
As a whm i pted with lots of plds who dont use mp and since this pld did use his mp we managed to get good exp
i wasnt used to plds having to use all their mp

lots of times pld use mp on a need basis
but by using the plds mp
my MP was around 450/652 after one battle

we chained helm beetles and got a chain bonus of 4 equaling 250 exp

well.. same as balla 2.... but... still more bards have balla 2 than more redmages have refresh....

I've partied with a couple rdm's that have refresh too and I must agree that I'd pick a rdm with refresh over a whm any day. It just makes the whm look irrelevant. With the expansion coming, rdm's will be able to play even more tricks with MP (change), so I think things are looking up for rdms; rdms that have money anyway

A couple other things: The rdms I've partied with put that they have refresh in their comment. It's nearly a sure bet that if its not listed in their comment, or they have no comment, they don't have refresh. So if you're a rdm with refresh, be sure to fill out your comment, it'll help you out a lot getting parties

An after thought: if you don't have refresh, leave your comment blank. I've gambled a couple times inviting a rdm hoping that they had refresh

that is a dumb idea of partying without a whm
their is one reason only that a party needs a whm
why you might ask?

for proteaIII not protectIII
you know rdms can only cast protect on single targets
and do you realize casting protectIII on everyone drains mp so fast
proteaIII is one of the greatest spells out there
my defense goes up like 50-70 defense
I not really sure how high but high enough

i think if you are fighting enemies that don't hurt your status so badly (ie: lizard's stone, curse) a PT can still perform well with out WHM. A RDM can replace WHM in these case. with /whm RDM can heal a lot of basic status such as paralyse, blind.

Still, that's only the case when there's no WHM available at all a PT will want atleast 1 WHM no matter where they go.

Wow, reading this really makes me glad now that I know that raising my RDM wasn't all in vain.

I've recently noticed RDMs mention that they have Refresh when they shout while looking for a party in Jeuno. At first I figured having Refresh wasn't worth the actual mention of it, but now I know better.

Oh well, I suppose I'll have to start saving 1.2~1.5 million gil so I'll have enough money when I hit 42.

Woah, really? O.o

I was in a party two days ago and the conversation topic was how expensive Refresh was, and the number 'hyakuman' (one million) came up several times, so I figured it was only around one million.

Oh well, I suppose a spell of that caliber is bound to be expensive.
