I've been stuck off of FFXI for a couple days once due to problems updating. Other times I've managed to get one system updated promptly and had my other system require days to get properly updated.
As a result, I now make a point of putting up a VNC Server on my desktop at home, and sshing into my local network from work so I can start the update remotely. FFXI may not work from VNC, but POL does. It's irritatingly slow, but it works.
(Note that having VNC listen to the internet in general is a potential security risk which I don't recommend unless you go into more detail in setting up authentication and encryption than I have. My preferred method is to use an SSH server on the local network to establish encrypted tunnels for VNC. A VPN solution may also make some sense. If your desktop is directly internet-facing, you might want to set up an SSH server on your desktop and configure VNC to only accept loopback connections.)
