That's a really fascinating project idea.
I've been doing lots of travelling in my free time getting background shots for some banners I'm doing for my LS forums, and I'll definitely keep you in mind next time I go. My system is no powerhouse, but it produces some nice shots with registry hacks and whatnot. I generally take shots at 1280x1024 overlay and 2048x2048 background.
