Ah i see where you actually use overlays, I dont.
My method for editing .dats is quite simple really. Faces and hair in particular.
When I edit hair I use the painstacking method of highlighting and turning it grey they coloring to taste. Im a perfectionist so I like to "add" things to my toons, like Earings and tattoos and what not. So i Simply add the colors in by hand then go from there. That way I know Im getting the look I want, not just a palette swap. I do the same thing when I do Photomanips, Its the same method.
