FFXI uses hiragana, katakana, kanji, and Roman letters. Fluent Japanese uses a mix of all three Japanese character sets. Kanji is used for word stems and compuunds usually, hiragana is used for particles and parts of words that kanji aren't present for, and katakana is used like italics or for words from non-oriental languages. You need to learn all 3 to be able to coverse in text form well in Japanese, and kanji is going to be the biggest hurdle.
