no one can tell you what resolution to use. It'd be best if you test out for yourself what resolution you would want to play on and see if the framerate drop is worth the better graphics. Try using a variety of resolutions and find one that has the best compromise between high graphics and playability. The Original Poster's directions were very clear and cut. I think anyone would be able to follow them.

-= my results =-

I have an overclocked amd rig.

Athlon Xp 3200+ (2.4ghz) (200mhzbus)
512mb pc3700 ram (200mhz) 2-2-2-6
Western Digital 200gb SE
Asus A7n8x deluxe v2
Ati Radeon 9700

I tried using the 2048x2048 and it looked simply amazing and was a vast improvement over the "regular high quality setting" in FFXI's config. But when I finally took my character to Valkrum Dunes and the wind was blowing, my White Mage was barely able to heal people on time due to the lag. Thus I was forced to turn down my settings, unfortunately. I tried 1600x1600 but there was a drop in frame rates which was enough for me to turn the graphics down even further. Now I'm at 1280x1024 and I couldn't be happier. I also turned FSAA 6x and Anisotropic Filtering to 16x and the game looks Great. I can handle auction halls smoothly, any type of weather and the game looks terrific. Thanks OP.
