  • MDB Soulsaber/Shamshir?

    Is anyone here working on, or has already completed, the Magic Defense Bonus branch of the Soulsaber/Shamshir? How effective is it for tanking magic-damage-heavy fights?

    The wiki claims it can reach MDB+9 at level 85 -- what's the difference between that and -9% magic damage taken?
    Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
    RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
    All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

    Re: MDB Soulsaber/Shamshir?

    -%MDT is, strictly speaking, slightly superior to MDB. (Calculating Magic Damage - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more)

    Say you're a PLD/BLU in Ballista going one-on-one with a BLU/PLD with MAB spells set and casting 1000 Needles, and he nails the spell, which apparently lands for only 750 unmodified in Ballista . . .

    If you were to use 10 MDB in equipment, the 750 would be multiplied by a ratio of 1.2/1.1, yielding 818 damage. If you had a Defending Ring instead, though, you'd have 750 multiplied by 1.2, and then multiplied again by .9, yielding 810 damage. (This is assuming you forget to use Shell, of course, which is more free -%MDT in and of itself.) Basically, it's the difference between 10/11ths and 9/10ths.

    So, the effect of the MDB sword might not be as good for magic-heavy fights as the -%PDT sword is for everything else, but if you have the time to get it for the situations it'd be useful in, it's most certainly better than nothing.

      Re: MDB Soulsaber/Shamshir?

      MDB+9 sounds quite good for survival purposes, as there aren't many swords to address magic damage. With enough other MDB, can probably consistently survive Citadel Buster from Proto-Ultima without using Iron Ram Lance.

      But, other than as a counter measure to Citadel Buster, where you'd get more time to swing sword and keep TP using this sword, would it really help you tank? Do you frequently fight NMs with devastating magic attacks? It's really hard to beat Joyuese for the TP gain (now with added bonus damage from Enlight) for most toe-to-toe fights if survival isn't an issue.

      Depending on how often you fight Abyssea NMs, it may be more efficient use of your time to get Atma of Ebon Hoof (HP+30%) and various Abyssite of Merit first to improve HP for survivability with both physical and magical.

      Of course, if you have those done already, then this sword is a logical follow up after the PDT- sword.

      It does look like a decent kiting sword, though, I'll give it that.

      yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
      Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
      leaving no trace in the water.
